Those residing in Jurong, especially in Jurong West would know about the devastating fire that consumed a coffee shop and wet market along Jurong West St 41 yesteryear.
It affected the stall holders who were subsequently moved to a temporary market to resume their business.
Now, after more than a year, the place is getting a facelift of sorts.
New complex
The design for the new complex at Block 493 Jurong West Street 41 was unveiled yesterday, TODAY reported.
Built by the Housing and Development Board, this project is estimated to cost S$6.2 million which is fully funded by the government.
It will be called, Jurong Central Plaza; this two-storey structure will have a 420 sqm market and a 433 sqm hawker centre on the first floor whereas the second floor will be used as a meeting point for the older citizens residing around the vicinity.
The complex will be designed in a way to suit the senior citizens such as wider aisles for stalls, better-ventilated environment and non-slip tiles. The last one being the most important of all.
The project will be completed by December 2018.
Residents are very pleased with this new and upcoming leisure complex
63-year-old Janice Leong told TODAY, “I live just next to the new complex, at Block 499. Currently I walk slightly further to Giant supermarket to buy my groceries. When the new complex is ready I would go back to the wet market, as certainly fresh produce is better than preserved or frozen food.”
She also mentioned that the hub would help her “find things to do, and pass the time” as she is planning to retire in 2 year’s time.
Pork seller One Ping Huat, one of the many merchants who was affected by the fire, said, “This is an ageing area, and there are more elderly. If the hub (for elderly residents) is upstairs, more will come to the market and buy produce on the way home as the elderly prefer to cook at home.”
Thoughts
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I am happy to hear the residents around the area, especially the senior residents, would have a newly-minted communal building where they can meet and greet their neighbours.
