A cloudy day, overcast with melancholy and mourning.
On the night of 18 January, a 22-year-old Malaysian woman by the name of Khoo Yee Joo was found drifting along the Sungei Api Api River in Pasir Ris, three days after she was last seen.
The police claimed that they received the call at 7:11pm on 18 Jan, before they promptly arrived at the scene to retrieve the body.
The attending paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
Her Work in Singapore
According to Lianhe Zhaobao, after Ms Khoo had graduated from university, she had passed the interview to become an assistant Chinese teacher at a local student care in Singapore at the end of November 2021.
She had been ecstatic and cherished the job opportunity because it was her first job.
Although she felt slightly pressured by how noisy and difficult her students could be at times due to their young age, her state of mind had been stable during their calls, her 50-year-old mother told Chinapress, a Malaysian Newspaper.
While Ms Khoo was staying in Singapore, she lived with her aunt, Huang Yan Ying, in a Toa Payoh flat.
Ms Huang stated that her niece was an obedient person. She was usually punctual whenever she was going or returning home from work, and would inform her before she went out with her friends on her days off.
Last Seen Near Chai Chee Industrial Park
When Ms Huang returned to an empty home at 10pm on 15 Jan, she realised that Ms Khoo was nowhere in sight.
Ms Huang did not think much of it until she received a text from her sister on Sunday (16 Jan), stating that Ms Khoo was not responding to any calls or text messages.
Ms Huang immediately sought help from her neighbours to search for Ms Khoo in the surrounding area.
She even went to Ms Khoo’s workplace to inquire about her whereabouts.
According to her two colleagues, she was last seen at the bus stop opposite Chai Chee Industrial Park as they walked to the bus stop together at around 6pm.
The bespectacled woman had been carrying a canvas bag, wearing a white T-shirt, beige pants, and black shoes.
Her two colleagues had boarded the first of three incoming buses, whilst Ms Khoo was taking the third, though it is unknown if she ever made it on the bus.

Leading Up to the Discovery
Left with no other recourse apart from calling the police, the family took to Facebook in a plea to track down their missing daughter on 16 January.
The following post and poster have already been removed ever since Ms Khoo was found.
Her parents had been planning on taking a flight to Singapore 21 Jan to Singapore to search for her personally if there was no news of her by then.
Alas, Ms Khoo was discovered floating on Api Api River on the evening of 18 January, and her family members were promptly contacted once she was identified.
Since Ms Khoo’s personal belongings were missing when she was found, the police had to identify her by her fingerprints.
Responses to her Death
From what preliminary examinations show, there have been no signs of foul play, nor is it a case of homicide.
Her funeral is currently being arranged by her aunt in Singapore.
Ms Khoo’s mother, Huang Yan Jie, was distraught by the news of her daughter’s death and her voice sounded hoarse during her brief interview with Chinapress.
Due to her family’s worries for her, they were unwilling to let her personally handle her daughter’s funeral arrangements.
Sincerely, we extend our condolences to the Khoo and Huang family for the loss of their daughter and niece.
