Anyone can open a YouTube account, but not everyone will become popular enough to make money off the platform.
You can have good content and decent filmmaking skills, but gaining followers is still a tough task.
Unless, of course, you’re Kim Jong-kook.
Within 30 minutes of releasing his first video, the Korean entertainer garnered over 100,000 subscribers. Within a day of the video’s release, that number grew to 250,000.
And just five days later, he already has more than a million followers.
How… how is this possible?
Well, the answer is very simple: he took off his shirt and carried some rather heavy weights.
Kim Jong-kook Starts A YouTube Channel & His Only Video Already Has 7M Views
On 17 June, the “Running Man” star shared a 3-and-a-half minute long workout video where he, well, works out. Duh.
He grunts louder than an uncle getting up from a chair as his muscles bulge with every impressive lift.
He also talks about working out and shared a snippet of him having his post-workout meal.
What likely drew millions of viewers, however, wasn’t his food nor interview, but his topless torso.
He very aptly named his YouTube channel GYM JONG KOOK.
Very “Nosy” in the Gym
The 45-year-old said he is very “nosy” in the gym, joking that some of the people who work out with him don’t call him back.
“I can’t stand looking at someone working out weirdly. I go insane when someone takes a long break. Break time is unnecessary,” he said.
“The fitness community says not to be nosy. You know, like getting in the way of people when they work out. That’s what a lot of gym guys do.”
But he added that he never forces anyone to work out if they don’t want to.
“When I work out with someone who likes and wants to work out well, it feels completely different and gives me joy. Then I feel good and I eat good food with them after working out.”
Once a scrawny teenager, Kim spent many grueling years in the gym to get the beefcake body that he has today and to be the hunk chunk that he is now.
As for his future plans for the channel, he hopes to do workout videos which viewers can exercise along to, which includes sharing his meal plans.
“Since I am no expert, I’ll try to share my passion for exercise rather than teaching,” he said.
Last Sunday (13 Jun), fellow cast member Lee Kwang-soo‘s final episode of “Running Man” aired, a show which Kim has been a part of from the start.
“It felt like we would go on like this forever without changing. The regret is even stronger because it’s Kwang-soo, with whom I thought I would go until the end,” Kim said.
“Even though we aren’t able to go on with ‘Running Man’ together anymore, let’s go for the rest of our lives together.”
