Ask football fans here who topped the respective premier football divisions last year in England, Spain, Germany, and Italy, and you’d likely get an answer in five seconds.
Ask the same question for the Singapore league, and many of them will whip out their phones and spend a minute or so Googling.
Some football fans in Singapore feel that the league here simply isn’t as exciting as some abroad, but Lion City Sailors is certainly trying to change that.
Founded in Feb 2020, the club smashed the league transfer history with a record S$3 million signing of Brazillian midfielder Diego Lopes as well as Lions captain, Hariss Harun, who led them to their first-ever title this year.
Now, they’ve made another signing which will be sure to draw more fans to the Jalan Besar Stadium.
S’pore Premier League Club Just Signed a $3 Million Contract for Kim Shin-wook
Yesterday (15 Nov), the Sailors confirmed the acquisition of South Korean international Kim Shin-wook.
The 33-year-old has signed on a free transfer from Chinese Super League giants Shanghai Shenhua as his contract with the Chinese club was due to expire at the end of the year.
He inked a $3 million contract that will keep him at the club for three years until 2024. This is much lower than the RMB30 million (S$6.34 million) annual salary he was said to be earning in China, but is still a Singapore Premier League (SPL) record.
“The Sailors project is an ambitious one that is fast gaining momentum. I was presented with the vision that got the club to this point, as well as what’s in the pipeline for the years ahead, and I immediately knew I wanted to be a part of it,” Kim said.
“I enjoyed my time in Shanghai Shenhua, and I’m grateful to the fans for all their support during the years I was at the club.
“I’m delighted for the opportunity to build something with the Sailors, and I’m looking forward to the exciting challenge in the years ahead,” he added.
ACL Experience & Goals
Kim will bring with him valuable experience in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League (ACL), where the Sailors will debut next year after securing qualification as the winner of the SPL.
He has won the competition twice while he was playing in the K-League, with Ulsan Hyundai in 2012, and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2016.
Other honours include:
- 2 K League 1 Champions medals
- 1 K League 1 MVP award in 2013
- 56 caps for South Korea
While he’s great with his feet, Kim will also be a constant target in the box for crosses, as he stands at 1.98m and is adept in the air.
“Shin-wook brings with him characteristics that will help take our game to the next level, and I’m delighted that he found as much excitement in the Sailors project as I did when I joined,” said manager Kim Do-hoon, who had won the ACL as well with Ulsan Hyundai in 2020.
“We are still a work in progress, but with the commitment from everyone at the club and the added boost that Shin-wook gives us, I’m confident that we will continue to get better.”
