On Friday (9 Aug), local media outlet SGAG shared a Facebook post drawing attention to the shoes in which PM Lawrence Wong arrived at NDP 2024. Specifically, the media outlet shared that the PM’s shoes resembled the running shoes used by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen.
If you’re an SAF serviceman who also noticed PM Wong’s shoes, you’re not alone.
The PM’s shoes have since become the talk of the town, with many netizens debating online about whether PM Wong’s shoes indeed were SAF running shoes.
In true FOMO fashion, we decided to plough through the internet to crack the mystery as well.
Some of us may have seen the bright blue Adidas Duramos or grey New Balance NB 565 being used by our friends and family members serving the nation — these were first rolled out to be used as running shoes by SAF servicemen in 2016.
However, these aren’t the shoes that netizens think PM Wong wore to NDP 2024.
Instead, netizens thought that PM Wong’s shoes resembled the New Balance ME565v7 that was rolled out more recently in 2021 alongside the Asics Gel-Jolt.

While we weren’t able to find a picture of the New Balance ME565v7 in the black colourway, a netizen shared a photo of what appears to be the New Balance ME565v7 in the black colourway on Facebook.
Close enough — this just might be PM Wong’s shoes. Perhaps PM Wong decided to wear SAF running shoes to NDP because NDP happened on a Friday — dress down day lah.
In response to SGAG’s Facebook post, SAF also shared a video on Facebook on the SAF running shoes, showing the New Balance ME565v7 in a lime-green colourway.
Perhaps this is a sign that SAF also thinks PM Wong was wearing SAF running shoes. Who knows?
What Else Could PM Wong Possibly Be Wearing?
However, not all netizens agreed that PM Wong’s shoes were the New Balance ME565v7. Others thought that PM Wong’s shoes resembled other shoes made by New Balance instead.
For instance, some thought that PM Wong’s shoes looked more like the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13.
Others thought PM Wong’s shoes could be the New Balance FuelCell Propel v4 as well.
Only one thing’s for certain — it’s a New Balance shoe lah. We’re just not so sure what the model is, and whether PM Wong’s shoes truly are the SAF running shoes — the New Balance ME565v7.
