Life-sized K-Pop Stars Pillows Triggered Netizens; FYI, We Also Have 2 But People DGAF Yet

Lest you’re unaware, K-Pop has been all the rage lately, with an idol suicide, broadcast hiccup and sheer good looks dominating new media headlines.

And it seems that the trend is not fading anytime soon too, with yet another controversy thrown into the mix.

The centre of attention this time?

K-Pop girl group G-Friend.

The issue at hand?

Well…

Apparently, the life-sized pillows were deemed too sexual in nature, and encourage people to do more than just “hugging the pillow”.

What happened?

On 29 Dec, Source Music released a set of life-sized pillows featuring K-Pop girl group G-Friend.

These pillows, which measure 180 cm in length and 60 cm in width, were pushed out ahead of the girl group’s first exclusive concert on 6 and 7 Jan in Seoul, Korea.

Criticism

According to The Korea Times, fans said online that the goods gave the same impression Japanese dakimakura pillows did, and that the pillows were pretty much sexual merchandise without the tag.

They even protested on the K-pop group’s social network site, stating that they would not purchase the items. Some have even used the hashtag #GFRIEND_goods_not_buying for the cause.

Withdrawal

Just one day later, on 30 Dec, Source Music announced that it has decided to cease production and sales of the pillows as part of G-Friend’s concert merchandise.

They also apologised in their official statement, stating that they will be more careful in the future.

Not exactly new

However, life-sized pillows of Korean idols aren’t exactly new. I should know, seeing how there’s not one, but two life-sized pillows in our own office.

Incidentally, my colleagues have very politely volunteered to take personal charge of them.

So yeah, as you can see…

Life-sized pillows do bring innocent joy to the office.

Although the first pic’s, admittedly, highly questionable. (HAHAHA, sorry YJ!)
