A few weeks ago, the whole of Singapore collectively went eww when they saw this photo online:
Yes, it’s spittle all over lift buttons. The lift buttons at Rumbia LRT Station at Sengkang, that is.
Fortunately, the three 15-year-old boys behind the disgusting deed were later found, and investigations are ongoing.
Now, however, we have a very different kind of problem.
Someone Has Been Stepping on Lift Buttons in Hougang Due to COVID-19 Fears
That’s right. One man is so afraid of contracting the Covid-19 virus that he has resorted to stepping on lift buttons with his nasty shoes.
According to Stomp, this inconsiderate buffoon stepped on lift buttons at Block 234 Hougang Avenue 1.
The netizen who uploaded the photos said “Seriously, we don’t need neighbours with kampung spirit. No sanitisers, no toothpicks. This is fine. But why leave footprints on the lift buttons and panels?
“We have a selfish and inconsiderate neighbour who is extremely fearful of the coronavirus that he or she has to resort to using his/her feet to step on the lift buttons.”
Could be a Resident
The netizen initially thought that the culprit was an outsider, but now believes that he is a resident after noticing reoccurrences.
“The footprints always appear on the button of Lift B at Level 12’s lift landing. You will also notice footprints on the number 12 button inside the lift.
“This has been happening for a few weeks already. You can imagine more footprints on the lift button panel inside the lift. How unfair is this to the rest of us using the lifts?!”
Just think of all the places that shoe has been – toilets, bus stops, crowded malls, more toilets…
Reaction
In response to a Stomp query, the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council said it is aware of the issue and is working to educate residents against such inconsiderate acts.
Is there no law against lift-button stepping?

A spokesman for the council said that they have stepped up cleaning and disinfection efforts around the estate, especially at “‘high-touch surfaces such as lift buttons.”
While experts are still unsure precisely how long the coronavirus can survive outside the body, one thing is for sure: stepping on lift buttons with your dirty-ass shoes is not going to help the situation.
What You Could Do Instead, Mr Stepper
If you’re the stepper and you happen to be reading this article, here are some things you can do instead:
- Take the goddamn stairs, even if you live on the 24th floor
- Press the lift button with your finger and immediately wash it when you get home or use hand sanitiser like a normal person
- Wear gloves before you press the button and dispose of them afterwards
- Try being a considerate human being
It’s unfortunate that we have people like this living with us at such a time, but the only thing we can do about it is to be extra cautious with our hygiene.
Wash your hands with soap and water regularly and refrain from touching your face with your hands.
And please, for the love of God, leave lift buttons alone. They are the real victims here.
