With the rainy weather being a more-than-familiar presence in most of our lives as of now, we might even say that we’ve gotten pretty accustomed to the lightning and thunder that have come with the weather.
But I’m pretty sure that none of us are used to what you’re about to see next.
On 23 April, Facebook user Mak Wei Seng posted the following photo to The Photographic Society of Singapore (PSS), a Facebook group.
According to Mak, the photo featured a HDB block at Queenstown opposite his house. He also said in the comments section that the photo was taken at 2.55pm, contrary to what the dark sky in the picture might suggest.
Several eagle-eyed netizens later mentioned that the HDB block in the photo was Block 53 Strathmore Avenue, which is a 43-storey HDB block located in Queenstown.
In his caption, Mak also asked why the lightning did not strike the lightning rods that are usually found on the top of HDB blocks in Singapore.
The unique and mind-boggling photo caught the attention of many netizens, and Mak’s post soon garnered over 1,200 shares on the social media platform.
Netizens’ Reactions
In the comments section, many netizens tried to chip in with reasons as to why the lightning struck the way it did.
Some thought that the building was still in the midst of being constructed, and the exposed scaffolding on the structure might have acted as a conductor for the lightning.
However, Mak replied that the building was not under construction, and even attached a photo to show that the units were lighted up from the inside.

Other netizens gave their own two cents, saying that the occupants of the uni may have accidentally placed metal or electrical appliances near the window, causing them to attract the lightning.
Of course, there were also a handful of people who jokingly said that the HDB unit in the photo belonged to Thor, and playfully said that even the lightning God has to stay in an HDB flat due to the current economy.
Well, if anything, I’m pretty sure we know which theory raised by netizens isn’t true.
