With Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) in motion, the collective weighty concern of the nation over the fate of our bubble tea outlets is very palpable indeed.Â
After all, no one wants to relive the days of last year’s circuit breaker which led to the closing down of bubble tea shops and the painful withdrawal symptoms for those who were deprived of their daily fix.Â
And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like we’ll have to say our (temporary) adieus to certain bubble tea outlets once again.Â
Selected Liho & Koi Outlets to Close Temporarily During Phase 2 (Heightened Alert)
On 15 May, Koi Thé announced on social media that they will be temporarily closing down their outlets at Lucky Plaza, The Arcade and Tanjong Pagar Plaza.Â
LiHo then announced two days later on 17 May that they will be temporarily shutting down eight of their outlets across the island.Â
These eight outlets include:Â
- Capitol PiazzaÂ
- JCube
- NUS
- One Raffles Place
- Changi Terminal 3Â
- Tekka PlaceÂ
- Sentosa Beach StationÂ
- Lucky ChinatownÂ
They also provided alternatives to these outlets that were located around the same area.Â
At least we can all take comfort in the fact that unlike last year’s circuit breaker, not all bubble tea stores will have to close.Â
Under the current Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), all F&B and retail outlets in Singapore are still allowed to remain open.Â
However, as the responsible citizens that we are, surely we can go without the sugary drink for a bit so as not to crowd bubble tea stores too much?Â
Bubble Tea… From Home?Â
The closure of bubble tea outlets across the island last year led to the innovative rise of homemade bubble tea recipes within the comfort of our very own kitchens.Â
And as the COVID-19 situation intensifies in Singapore, perhaps it’s time to get creative again by whipping up our own versions of the beloved beverage rather than deliberately leaving the house for our daily fix.Â
Last year, ST released a recipe for Black Sugar Bubble Tea with homemade tapioca pearls. Surprisingly, these pearls require only simple ingredients to make such as tapioca starch, sugar and water.Â
The article also contains tips and tricks to ensure that your bubble tea turns out perfectly, even if you’re something of a klutz in the kitchen (like this writer).Â
There are also tons of bubble tea recipes and tutorials online for you to have fun with, so maybe Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) won’t have to be so dull after all.
