If you know any aunties or uncles, you probably know that they like using apps to check the winning lottery numbers.

Even our older generation is tech-savvy when it comes to money.

These are all unofficial apps, which may lead to occasional errors in reporting. Case in point: the first prize winning numbers were misreported on 14 May.

Discrepancy in 1st Prize Numbers

According to the Singapore Pools official site, the lottery numbers for 14 May were 1401, 6867 and 9250, respectively.

However, in the unofficial Live 4D app, the first and third prize numbers appeared to be the same: 9250. It was only after 30 minutes that the error was corrected.

Initially, fans were excited as they’d never seen the same numbers appearing for multiple prizes. But with the change in first prize numbers, the original poster commented, “Today is Mother’s Day, not April Fool’s”.

How could our trusty 4D Live app fail us like this?

Human Error

Shin Min Daily News contacted the app developer, 52-year-old Mr Chen.

After investigating the app records, he said that the staff accidentally entered the number 9250 for both the first and third prizes.

“As soon as the staff discovered the error, they immediately corrected it,” Mr Chen said.

Additionally, he shared that the staff would go to the lottery draw arena to report the winning numbers live. As it is an on-site update, human error is always possible.

Lottery Draw Process

Wait, the staff went to the arena to watch the lottery process? How does that work?

According to the Singapore Pools site, you can go to the Singapore Pools building to watch the lottery draw live.

It’s a pretty complicated process with a total of ten steps. Firstly, the computer software will randomly select a draw machine and ball set to be used.

Each ball in the selected set will be weighed after unlocking the equipment and bringing it to the draw hall. This ensures that their weights are within an accepted variance margin to have an equal chance of being drawn.

After loading the balls into the machine, the announcer would invite an audience member to press the ‘Start’ button on the control panel, where the balls will spin in the sphere till one spins out into the selection chamber. This is repeated till all winning numbers are drawn.

The entire process is done in an independent public accounting firm’s presence to ensure that everything is fair and entirely by chance. The personnel will then complete the recording of the winning numbers, with the result being verified by the firm representative, before releasing it to the public.

This means the app’s staff members released the numbers on-site before the official results were released. Upon checking with the official site 30 minutes later, they discovered their error and updated the results on the app, which was why there was a time lag between posting and correcting the results.
