It’s not easy to be a criminal these days.

With everyone stuck at home, these poor criminals have no one to rob or beat up.

And if you’re a loan shark, how are you supposed to intimidate your victims if you’re not allowed to leave your home?

Loan shark: It’s been really tough on my family and me

I can imagine.

One loan shark discovered a novel way to harass his victims, though, and it involves deliveries from McDonald’s.

Loan Shark Ordered Food Delivery For a Debtor & Left the $800 Bills Hanging

When a 49-year-old man and his family received $800 worth of food on 13 April, he was confused, to say the least.

You see, he didn’t order the food, which left the food outlets stuck with the bill, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

This wasn’t some prank by a 13-year-old kid; this was actually a loan shark’s attempt to harass the innocent family.

According to the victim, the loan shark was looking for his older brother who reportedly owed him money.

However, his brother moved away six or seven years ago and denies ever borrowing money from loan sharks.

This poor family later moved into the same flat.

McDelivery

The first delivery was an order from McDonald’s which arrived at his home at about 2pm that day, the man said.

He thought that the tasty burgers were accidentally delivered to the wrong flat, but was told that the food was meant to be delivered to his unit.

The delivery man then called the loan shark to confirm the address before passing the phone to the man and his wife.

When they told the loan shark that his brother had moved away, the loan shark became furious and told them “not to act” before hanging up.

The conversation probably went something like this:

Loan Shark: What proof do you have that you’re not my brother?

Man: Well, I can show you my IC, birth certificate, driving license, passport, and-

Loan Shark: EH YOU DON’T ACT!

The man then made a police report online after the delivery man left, but that was just the beginning of his food delivery troubles.

Delivered $690 Worth Of Chinese Food

The innocent family later received two batches of food from two different Chinese restaurants at around 4pm and 6pm that day.

The bill for each restaurant came up to $402 and $288 respectively, he said.

The loan shark also threatened the family via the delivery men’s phones, warning that the food was “just an appetiser”.

It’s not very often that a loan shark makes a pun while intimidating his victims.

A police report has been lodged and investigations are ongoing, according to AsiaOne.

One Restaurant Absorbed The Bill

Out of sympathy for the poor family, one of the restaurant owners said he decided to absorb the $288 bill, even though his business hasn’t been doing so well.

The restaurant… had never run into this issue, he added.

Either way, this is certainly one of the strangest crimes ever committed. I mean, how would you react if someone delivered $100 worth of bubble tea to your house?

Reader: Well I’d be upset that they only delivered half of my usual daily order

Of course you would.

New Law That Gives Breathing Space for Signed Contracts

I know this obviously wouldn’t apply to loan sharks since they make their own laws, but if you’re like the loan shark and stuck with something similar to this, you might not be glad that there’s a new temporary law to protect individuals or businesses.

In an act under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Bill, for any contracts signed before 25 March 2020 would be a tad different; any party who breaches the contract can’t be sued, and if people still die-die want to take action, they shouldn’t order food delivery to their houses, but instead talk to an assessor who would be appointed by the Ministry of Law.

While the law just covered five board categories (leases and licences of non-residential property, construction-related contracts, event and tourism-related contracts, hire-purchase or conditional sales agreements and certain types of loans for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)), more can be added by the Law Minister.

Reader Bao: That doesn’t help the family at all
