Even though the internet is remarkably fast these days, users are still unsatisfied.
It took an interminable two seconds to load articles on the Goody Feed app. That’s unacceptable!
The citizens of the 21st century are notoriously impatient, so if there’s something out there which can help us load images of our friends’ Indomie meal on Instagram quicker, we’re certainly going to get it.
M1 Allows All Its Users to Use 5G As Long As They Have a 5G Device
M1 launched its 5G non-standalone (NSA) network on Thursday (25 September), making it the third mobile network operator to do so in Singapore, after StarHub in mid-August and Singtel earlier this month.
According to a media release, all M1 users will have access to the 5G network, provided they have compatible 5G NSA devices.
If you’re not sure whether your device is compatible, you can check out M1’s list of supported devices here.
At the moment, customers will only be able to connect to the M1 5G network in the central business district, Orchard Road, Suntec City and Marina Bay, the telco said.
A quick jaunt through their website shows quite a bit of location that has 5G coverage.
“Over the next few months, the service will also be extended to additional parts of the city, covering key town centres across Singapore by the end of 2020.”
Speaking about the move, Manjot Singh Mann, chief executive of M1, said: “5G will play a pivotal role in boosting Singapore’s digital economy”.
“We have already seen glimpses of its potential through various enterprise and consumer 5G use cases and trials that we have embarked on so far. Now, we’re thrilled to bring our customers the very best of this game-changing technology to our customers.”
Price
High speeds are great and all, but how much will it cost me?
The 5G Booster packs which will be extended to all M1 customers will range from $15 for 25GB to $40 for 100GB.
Customers who sign up before the end of 2020 will enjoy a 70% discount on the 5G Booster pack for six months, along with a year-long free subscription to VIU.
If you have a compatible device and are interested, all you have to do is head to M1’s official site to sign up.
5G vs 4G
But is 5G really that much better than 4G? Is it really worth the upgrade?
In a word, yes.
According to CNN, there are a few reasons why 5G is superior to its older sibling, the two most notable of which are speed and capacity.
5G is expected to be nearly 100 times faster than 4G, meaning you could download a two-hour movie in fewer than 10 seconds.
This is because 5G networks are built on super-high-frequency airwaves which transmit data much faster than 4G networks.
Moreover, when it comes to 4G, too many devices in a small area can often cause network speeds to slow down due to congestion.
But 5G is expected to have significantly more capacity than 4G, which will allow more devices to connect to a network at any given time, and in turn, lead to faster speeds.
So, that annoying buffering circle that we all detest may soon be a thing of the past, something we tell our grandkids about one day.
Of course, be prepared to burn through your data faster if you hitch on to the 5G wagon. After all, the fast you load, the more you’ll load. Goodbye, data.
