Over the years, Singapore has seen its fair share of maid abuse across the nation. However, it seems like the abuse cases have gotten more severe over the years.

Like this latest case.

Abused from The Beginning

Ms Sulis Setoywati, 26, started to work for her former employer, former Singtel employee, Nuur Audadi, 31, in December 2017. Shortly after she started work, the nightmare began.

In January 2018, Nuur Audadi was enraged when she found out that Ms Sulis did not apply the baby ointment on her infant. As a result, she scolded her, spat at her and slapped her twice.

In another instance, Nuur Audadi had struck Ms Sulis with a glass cup cover after failing to prepare breakfast. She had also dragged and pulled Ms Sulis’ hair after she caught her singing to her children and not showering them.

After these incidents, Ms Sulis cried and requested to be transferred to another employer. However, Nuur Audadi promised her that she would stop hitting her. In need of money to send back home for her child, Ms Sulis agreed to continue working for her.

In addition to her promise, Nuur Audadi also took her to MOM in April 2018 to report that her former employer who had not paid her. In court, it was revealed that Ms Sulis felt thankful to her as occasionally, she did not treat her like a maid.

Even More Abuse

The promise was soon broken as Nuur Audadi continued to hit her later that month. Ms Sulis was tasked to clean her husband’s motorcycle, but had forgotten to ask for the house key before the couple left. Upon returning, she hit Ms Sulis with an umbrella handle and poked her abdomen with it several times until it bruised her.

Later, Nuur Audadi discovered Ms Sulis’ phone and went through her chats and photos. She discovered that Ms Sulis had some photos of her children.

In a fit of anger, she then slapped her several times and threw her phone onto the ground. Not only did she confiscate her phone, but she also continued to slap and pull on Ms Sulis’ hair almost every day of the week.

Nuur Audadi then slapped her again, and told her that she had paid lots of money for her due to her request to her agent for a transfer. After discovering that Ms Sulis’ phone was missing from her room, she ordered her to search for it until midnight. Ms Sulis was then forced to sleep in the living room, with her room and front door locked so that she could not escape.

The abuse did not end there.

Accused Her of Being a “Prostitute”

On 30 April, she was verbally abused by Nuur Audadi. It began with an assault for several reasons, one including her oily hair. Nuur Audadi then asked her if she was a prostitute and questioned if she had any intent on seducing her husband.

Unfortunately for Ms Sulis, who did not understand the question, she replied with a yes. This caused Nuur Audadi to fly into a rage and hit her with a broom while calling her a prostitute.

The Escape

This incident was the final straw, and prompted Ms Sulis to escape from the flat.

To get to her locked room, Ms Sulis climbed onto the balcony and threw her clothes down. She then began her escape by scaling down 15 floors.

That took her an entire morning.

After her successful escape, she went to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital to seek medical attention, where they found bruised on different parts of her body as well as cuts on her chest and shoulder.

Although it has been two years since her escape, Ms Sulis still remains scared of Nuur Audadi.

At this, the prosecutor has fought for at least a charge of 10 months’ jail. It is also noted that Nuur Audadi has inflicted physical and psychological harm on Ms Sulis. In addition, she was triggered by flimsy excuses to fly into a rage and even denied the allegations.

If you know a domestic helper who may need assistance in an abusive household, do encourage them to seek help from MOM at 6438 5122. Don’t wait for them to climb 15 floors down a flat before you take action.
