By now, you’ll probably have heard about the Malaysian female bus captain, who had been operating bus 189 along Clementi Avenue 1 when she received news of her husband’s passing over in Malaysia. But if you haven’t, here’s a rough recap:

The bus captain had parked alone at a bus stop, as she was unable to contain her grief at the news. Three men approached her when they noticed her sobbing, and proceeded to assist her with tissue paper and a drink upon hearing her story.

Later on, another bus 189 passed by and despite their pleas, soon moved on quickly as there were passengers on board.

The emotional bus captain, who is Malaysian herself, had been separated from her husband due to the circuit breaker measures in place.

Tower Transit & M’sia Helping Bus Captain Whose Husband Passed Away While She’s Driving

According to Malaymailthe Malaysian High Commission has heard of the female bus captain’s story, and is reportedly prepared to assist her journey back home.

Since 27 April 2020, Malaysians who wish to return home from Singapore (by land) must procure an entry permit from the High Commission of Malaysia at least two days before departure.

Allowances will be made, however, for emergency cases.

“If the case is an emergency, we will do our best to give the next available date to the applicant,” said Deputy High Commissioner Muhammad Radzi Jamaluddin.

Meanwhile, Tower Transit, the bus operator that runs bus service 189, has also pledged its full support for the aggrieved bus captain.

“It is a deeply painful time for her and we’re going to give her our full support as well and the space she needs to grieve privately,” said Tower Transit’s spokesperson.

The spokesperson also clarified that the bus company had sent one of its officers to assist her after knowing about her plight.

“Our officer arrived shortly after to assist her, while another one of our Bus Captains drove the bus back,” said the spokesperson, while thanking the gentlemen who stopped to help her.

Appropriate Procedures Will Still Have To Be Obeyed

Despite the nature of the case, procedures coined in light of the ongoing epidemic will still have to be obeyed.

“She may return. Why not?” said Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman R. Vidyanathan.

“Just that after the funeral she needs to go into quarantine. Every day, we are assisting Malaysians to return to their hometowns due to death in family.”

According to the chairman, the female bus captain will have to be registered in the Johor Bahru quarantine centre first. She will then be checked by health personnel and be subjected to a swab test.

“An application will be made to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma). Once approved, the Civil Defence Force (APM) will bring her over to attend the funeral.

“Once rites are done, they will send her to the nearest quarantine centre,” he said.
