M’sia Considering RM100K (S$33K) Fine For Drink-Driving, Jail Up To 20 Years

When you drink, don’t drive.

This is something that makes so much sense, but many choose not to follow it.

Because their convenience is more important than anything else, these drink-drivers decide to go ahead and drive home anyway.

M’sia Considering Six-Figure Fine For Drink-Driving

On 15 Feb 2020, it was reported that Malaysia might increase the penalty for drink-driving.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that they are studying to amend “the penalty under Section 41 (of the Road Transport Act 1987) for those who cause accidents leading to death due to driving in a drunken state”.

Currently, the maximum fine for drink-driving in Malaysia is RM20,000.

It could be adjusted to RM100,000.

Double The Jail Time

And that’s not all. The current maximum jail time for drink driving is 10 years.

It can possibly be increased to 20 years too.

Working Together To Keep Drink-Driving Incidents Down

In Malaysia, there are at least 7,000 fatal drink-driving accidents every year. Malaysia has one of the highest rates of fatal road accidents in the world.

While the rate of fatal accidents has gone down, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng ask for Malaysians to work together to bring it down further.

S’pore Could Use A Crackdown On Drink-Driving Too

Back in Feb 2019, it was reported that the number of motorists running red lights and drink driving accidents has increased.

In 2018, there were 176 drink driving-accidents, up from 150 the previous year.

Motorcyclists who rode and got into accidents while drink-driving has also spiked up as well.

On Nov 2019, harsher penalties were implemented for drivers who engage in reckless behaviour when driving on the roads.

Don’t Drink And Drive

Remember, drink-driving isn’t cool. For that extra bit of thrill, or convenience, you could be making the worst decision of your life.

Be like the doggo who hid its owner’s car keys.
