As a barber, there are many things you have to be prepared for:
- Foul-smelling hair
- Finding lice in someone’s hair
- An annoyingly talkative customer
These are all minor issues that can be easily resolved. What barbers don’t expect, however, is to get molested while cutting someone’s hair.
But that’s exactly what happened to a female barber recently.
Man Molested Female Barber as She Cut His Hair
At the time of the offences, the suspect, Indian national Wilson Selvanson, worked as a welder and stayed at a foreign workers’ dormitory.
The 32-year-old walked into the in-house barber shop at the dormitory on 2 January this year, and the victim happened to be working there that day.
He said he wanted a haircut and the victim told him to wait his turn.
At around 8:00pm, he sat in the barber’s chair and the woman asked how he wanted his hair cut. He gestured that he wanted a short trim.
As the victim began cutting his hair, Selvanson started asking her personal questions such as her age, and even asked her to pull down her mask so he could see her face.
But that was only the beginning of it all.
At one point, Selvanson reached out and rubbed the woman’s buttocks before sliding his hands into her jeans.
The woman told him to stop and he withdrew his hand, but he boldly asked her: “Is there a problem?”
Well, yes, sticking your hands down someone’s pants without their consent is a bit of a problem.
The woman was frightened but continued to cut the man’s hair. Selvanson then reached under her apron, unbuttoned her jeans, and molested her.
The victim backed away in response and pleaded with him to stop, saying she was scared.
But instead of apologising and feeling remorse for what he did, he paid her $6 and asked her for her number.
The woman, of course, refused and reported the matter to her supervisor and to the police.
Could Face 2 Years in Jail
Through CCTV footage and dorm management records, the authorities managed to identify and arrest Selvanson.
Today (11 May), the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of outraging the barber’s modesty. Another two similar charges will be considered in sentencing.
While the prosecution has called for a year’s jail and three strokes of the cane, the offence of outrage of modesty carries a jail term of two years, a fine, caning, or any combination of these punishments.
