Man Fell for Credit-for-Sex Scam But Lodged a False Police Report Instead to Get Back His Money

If a woman online offers sexual favours in return for expensive gifts, it’s probably a scam.

If a woman online promises to fulfil your wildest sexual fantasies if you transfer thousands of dollars to her account, it’s probably a scam.

If a woman online promises all these things without ever showing a photo, it’s probably a man.

Blue balls? Call the police

One 25-year-old man, however, allegedly lodged a false police report after falling for one of these credit-for-sex scams.

In their media release, the police said: “The man claimed he had accidentally bumped into one of the three men, and the trio had demanded that he transfer Alipay credits to compensate for the injuries”.

He added that he had purchased and sent the serial codes of the Alipay credits worth S$9,200 to a specified email address.

Fishy story

However, officers discovered several inconsistencies in the man’s account and later uncovered that he was a victim of a credit-for-sex scam.

According to the police, the man “received an unsolicited offer for sex services from a woman on an online dating application, and was told to make a deposit via Alipay credits to book her services”.

These credits amounted to at least S$9,200.

Did she offer sex in a private jet or something?

The man soon realised that he had been scammed when he did not get to meet the woman.

He then lodged a false police report in an attempt to recoup the lost money. One can only wonder how he can recoup the money…from a scam that’s made up of a fake story.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Sex scams on the rise

The police said that credit-for-sex scams are on the rise, with over 500 reports last year involving S$1.5 million.

But hey, at least something’s on the rise, am I right?

So, how can you tell if that pretty lady online is a scammer?

Here are some tell-tale signs of a credit-for-sex scam 

• Friend requests from strangers on Facebook, WeChat and iAround, especially if they are offering escort, massage or sexual services
• They profess strong feelings for you quickly after befriending you and who want to chat with you privately
• Poorly written messages. Some might even refer to you by the wrong name
• Repeated requests for favours or money

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself

• Do an image search of the person’s photo to verify their identity
• Make sure you don’t give out your personal details to strangers online
• Do not provide payment receipts containing details such as PINs or credit card numbers to anyone
