A horrific incident occurred in Shuangxi District, New Taipei City on 17 Apr 2025, when a 42-year-old man surnamed Jian gouged out his 59-year-old neighbourโs eyes during a heated conflict over a leaking water pipe.
The violent confrontation took place around 9am between Jian, a hardware store owner, and his next-door neighbour Lian, who owns an electrical appliance store.
Their dispute centred on the water pipe handling problem of a wasteland between their properties, reported ETtoday.

During the altercation, Jian struck Lianโs head with a brick. In retaliation, Lian bit Jianโs left arm.
While attempting to free himself, Jian inserted his fingers into Lianโs eyes and forcefully removed them, throwing the eyeballs onto the ground.
Paramedics arriving at the scene found Lian with blood covering his face and a crooked jaw. Initially, they didnโt notice his eyes had been gouged out since his eyelids were closed.
Police and firefighters transported Lian to National Keelung Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital where he was intubated for emergency treatment.
When police returned to the crime scene, they discovered both eyeballs on the ground โ one intact and the other crushed.
Despite efforts to rush the eyeballs to Linkou Changyu Hospital, medical staff confirmed Lian has been permanently blinded.
Legal Consequences
After the incident, Jian surrendered to police and was transferred to the Keelung District Prosecutorโs Office on attempted murder charges. The prosecutor ordered him to post bail of NTD120,000 (S$4,836.11).
On 19 Apr, Jianโs mother spoke to reporters, revealing a history of conflict between the families. She claimed Lian frequently harassed their household, including her 80-year-old husband.

โLian often took things to bang in the middle of the night, making noises and causing trouble to the neighbours. He even secretly filmed family members using the toilet,โ she stated. โItโs painful to live here.โ
Other neighbours confirmed that Lian had a reputation for being problematic.
A neighbour surnamed Chen mentioned that while Jian and Lian often had minor disputes regarding repairs and lack of cooperation, they had never engaged in physical conflict before this incident.
