Man Repeatedly Molested His Subordinate & Even Said, ‘Why, Your Father Never Touch You ah?’

Sexual harassment can take place anywhere, and to anyone. Unfortunately, it can also happen in the workplace by someone you actually know.

While you may be afraid to voice out the harassment especially if the perpetrator is your supervisor because you don’t want to face the risk of losing your job, it is necessary to do so.

Man Repeatedly Harassed & Molested Subordinate

This was what happened to a 32-year-old lady who was employed by a company to be a relationship manager and was assigned to be under the supervision of a 53-year-old man.

They first met at the headquarters of the company on 16 April 2018, and after he brought her to their office, she was assigned to sit at the table next to his.

On the morning of their first meeting, when they were walking from Aljunied MRT Station, the man molested her by touching her shoulders and brushing his forearm against her breast over her clothes.

The harassment stopped until three weeks later when he sent her a photograph of a pair of heels on WhatsApp. This pair actually belonged to the victim, and he sent two follow-up messages, “See this!!!” and “Fetish on my end… hehe”.

Two days later, he touched her inappropriately again.

When they were in a restaurant at Chijmes, he pulled her hand towards him and held it without her consent. One hour later, as they were on an escalator at City Hall MRT Station, he rubbed her arm a few times.

Despite the victim voicing her discomfort, he continued with his harassment four days later when they were sitting at their office desks.

For some reason, he thought it would be okay to poke her waist with his finger. The victim immediately told him that she would report him to the human resources department if he touched her again.

Instead of backing down, he simply said, “Why, your father never touch you, ah?”

She then responded with, “Which kind of father touches his child like that?”

After this encounter, she left the office to grab lunch. It was revealed that he apologised for what he had done later on.

While most people would think that he would stop at this point, the reality is that he didn’t.

At around midnight on 2 June 2018, he sent the victim another WhatsApp message saying, “Hey gal… I can’t help but to grin/laugh while bathing earlier.”

Reporting to Authorities; Court Hearing

The victim reported this to the authorities and he was finally charged in court on Monday, 11 October.

Three other charges of outrage of modesty and two of harassment were considered for sentencing.

The man pleaded guilty to one charge of outrage of modesty.

The prosecutor requested that the man be fined, while the man’s lawyer Andy Yeo from law firm Eldan Law asked for a $1,000 fine.

District Judge Eddy Tham said that the amount was too little considering the nature of the relationship that the man and his victim had, as well as the number of charges considered for sentencing.

In the end, the man was sentenced to a $2,500 fine. Mr Yeo also told the court that the man realised his actions were wrong and admits responsibility for that.

If charged with molestation, one can be sentenced to a two-year jail term, a fine, and caning.
