On 31 October 2024, a man died at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) checkpoint in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, while attempting to evade immigration checks.
The man, identified as a Sri Lankan national in his 30s, reportedly tried to avoid inspection by jumping from a pedestrian bridge at the checkpoint, which links Johor Bahru with Singapore.
Footage of his fall has also circulated on social media.

Man Jumped Off Bridge at JB Checkpoint to Evade Immigration Checks, Landing on a Car
The Johor Bahru South police confirmed that they were alerted to the situation at approximately 4:48 p.m. on Thursday.
The man attempted to evade inspection by climbing through the glass panels of the bridge that connects JB Sentral to the Sultan Iskandar CIQ building, a major crossing point between Malaysia and Singapore.
He fell onto a passing vehicle, a Perodua Myvi, before landing on the ground.
Footage of the incident, which circulated on social media, showed the man squeezing through a gap in the glass panels before his fall.
The car that he landed on was badly damaged, with its roof severely caved in due to the impact.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead on the spot.

His body was later transported to Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Bahru for an autopsy. Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, the Johor Bahru South police chief, stated that initial investigations showed no signs of foul play, and the case has been classified as a sudden death.
Photos shared by the Facebook group Community Roda Johor showed the aftermath of the fall, with police officers and onlookers gathered near the damaged car.
Eyewitnesses described seeing the man maneuver through the glass panels before losing his balance and falling.
Authorities’ Response
Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat confirmed that the police found no evidence of criminal elements related to the man’s death.
The case was categorized as a sudden death.
