Turns out, it’s not just ostriches that do that. Some humans do it too.

Man Covered His Eyes with His Mask So He Couldn’t See Police Officers Approaching Him

On 3 May, police officers on patrol spotted 63-year-old Ong King Hwa sitting at a stone bench outside Hao supermarket at Whampoa Drive, drinking beer and chatting with a friend.

When he saw the police officers approaching, he pulled his mask up to cover…his eyes.

Here’s BuffLord95 predicting that someone will do it in the future.

Who would’ve thought it would ever come true?!

As you can tell, out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind and he put it on properly after being told by the officers to do so.

Caught Again

On 8 May 2020, another group of officers on patrol spotted three elderly men, including Ong, seated at the stone bench again, drinking beer and chatting.

The three men were not wearing their masks properly, having pulled it down to their chins.

Ong told the officers that he was bored at home, which was why they met up.

On compassionate grounds, the police officers told them to leave the area within 5 minutes.

When they came back around, two of the elderly men were packing up to go.

Ong, however, refused to leave and challenged the officers to “summon him”.

Fined $3,500 For Breaching Safe-Distancing Measures

On 12 June 2020, Ong pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching safe-distancing measures during the Circuit Breaker period.

It was also revealed that he had been issued composition fines of $300 (12 Apr) and $1,000 (3 May) but did not pay the fines.

He was also convicted of verbally abusing and using criminal force on public servants in the past.

Due to this, the Deputy Public Prosecutor Jane Lim urged for the court to issue a $3,500 fine to Ong so that a clear signal can be sent to such offenders.

The court decided to issue a fine of $3,500 to Ong.

If he doesn’t pay up this time, he’ll have to be jailed for a week.

Always Wear Masks Properly In Public

Yes, we’re in Phase One but that doesn’t mean we’re out of the red zone yet.

A new study in the US has recently shown that wearing masks is proven to be more effective at keeping Covid-19 transmission down than any social distancing measures.

In northern Italy, it was estimated that mask-wearing rules helped to reduce infections by 78,000 while in New York City, it was estimated to reduce infections by 66,000.

So let us all keep up the efforts and who knows, we might enter Phase 2 early, just as experts in Singapore has predicted.
