When the Singapore Police Force revealed that they’re investigating Ms Raeesah Khan, the Workers’ Party candidate contesting in Sengkang GRC, everyone was wondering, why at such a nice timing?
Even Tan Cheng Bock, the head of Progress Singapore Party (PSP), stepped forward and described it as “gutter politics“.
He asked why the police reports were only lodged now and asked parties to look at themselves and ask if they had competed in a “gentlemanly way”.
Well, he might have been on to something when he says the reports were “timed to coincide” with GE2020, but it could’ve been done by an individual instead of a party.
Police Investigating Man Who Allegedly Flagged Raeesah Khan’s Posts
The Raeesah Khan saga has resulted in a lot of things:
The emergence of political cats (we knew cats would rule the world one day)
And police reports made against a Singapore minister (remember, the government’s still functioning now despite the dissolution of parliament):
Turns out, Mr Heng isn’t the only one who had police reports (plural) lodged against him.
The man who allegedly started the entire Raeesah Khan saga also has police reports lodged against him, and the police are now investigating this individual according to their statement on 7 Jul 2020.
The man is being investigated for two charges.
The first is for “posting comments on social media with deliberate intent to wound religious or racial feelings under Section 298 of the Penal Code”.
And the second is for “harassment under Section 4 of the Protection from Harassment Act”.
Currently, police investigations are ongoing.
How He Got Discovered
Remember how youths were caught for posting their stupiak antics on IG stories? Well, he allegedly did something similar.
He had claimed to be the first one to leak Raeesah Khan’s screenshots in a Facebook post which was later taken down.
But if you remember the first rule of the internet, you’ll know that’s not going to help.
“What appears on the internet, stays on the internet.”
On 6 July, a netizen, in turn, leaked screenshots that were allegedly taken from the man’s social media account, including this one where he implied bad consequences for Khan’s father:
And this:
Okay, so that’s probably for the harassment part.
But what about “posting comments on social media with deliberate intent to wound religious or racial feelings under Section 298 of the Penal Code”?
Well, it might be because of these comments he had allegedly made:
One thing for sure, though, let’s not speculate about this further or try to get our own brand of justice.
Let the police handle the investigation properly. If he is really guilty, he’ll be punished by the law and maybe, he’ll finally understand that words in social media have consequences in the real world.
As for Ms Khan, WP Pritam Singh said in an impromptu door stop session yesterday, there will be a day where she will have to step forward and explain herself, but it’s not now while police investigations are ongoing.
And on a side note, candidates have been talking about NCMP (Non-Constituency Member of Parliament) in recent days. So, what’s an NCMP? Do you know that it’s just like an MP but the allowance is much lower? Watch this video to find out more:
