Today, we have a piece of (common sense) advice to dole out.

Wear your mask.

In this time and day where COVID-19 is running around, not only is it mandatory to wear one, but you’ll also lessen the spread of the virus.

Sadly, sometimes people just want to breach safety rules and even get violent about it.

50YO Man Whipped out a Knife and Threaten Bus Driver when He was Asked to Wear his Mask Properly

And Gan Wee Yeow, 50, took it even further.

On 24 March, Wednesday he pleaded guilty to six charges.

Three were for criminal intimidation and one each for voluntarily causing hurt, possessing offensive weapons without lawful purpose or authority and mischief.

This isn’t counting seven other charges that he will be trialled for next time.

These include possessing weapons illegally, two are for dishonest misappropriation of property, one count each of using criminal force, mischief and failing to wear a mask at all times while outside his ordinary place of residence.

So yeah, a lot.

Among the few things he did were pulling out a knife and threatening a bus driver and even threatening a Gojek driver with a hammer.

Hyper Aggressive Behaviour

A lot of this happened in the middle of last year.

Gan’s Gojek incident happened on 27 July 2020, disputing with the driver along East Coast Road when he could not pay the full ride fare.

He then pulled out a hammer and began to smash the car’s centre console.

Three days later, Gan threatened a Certis officer with a hammer at the Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange.

The officer had spotted him standing at the berth with some items scattered across the floor in front of him.

Despite also being warned against waiting in the area, Gan responded aggressively.

He allegedly started shouting at the officer, later approaching him with the hammer and kicking him in the thigh.

The Knife Incidents

And then the bus incident happened on 26 Aug that year.

The bus driver saw Gan talking on the phone with his mask pulled down, and told him to wear it properly.

What the man got was vulgarities thrown his way and being threatened with a knife.

The driver then pressed the panic alarm button and returned to the bus interchange.

When police officers arrested Gan at Yishun MRT station, they seized a knife and a penknife.

Yet, despite being caught, it didn’t stop his aggressive streak.

Three days later, Gan threatened a worker with a knife at a Yishun coffee shop.

The latter had told him that a drink he bought was ready for collection.

Apparently, Gan took this as the worker rushing him and got offended as a result.

Police were later called.

Asking For Lighter Punishments

Gan pleaded for leniency in court.

He said that he was not taking the medication for his bipolar condition at that time and asked for a probation sentence.

He said he couldn’t unable to renew his licence as a security officer if he is jailed.

This was the job he worked since June 2016, with the license set to expire in May this year.

The District Judge asked to check if Gan was suitability for a mandatory treatment order. If given, he will get medical help for his mental condition in lieu of jail time.

His case will likely be heard again on 8 April.
