Sometimes, you feel like you’ve worked hard. So hard that you deserve a promotion. But when your boss announces that your coworker got the promotion instead, all you feel is disappointment, and perhaps even jealousy.

Of course, in such cases, most people would either suck it up and try to get the next one, go to their boss directly and ask why they weren’t given the promotion. Sometimes, they would just quit themselves.

But this 54-year-old Chinese national by the name of Shi Jingbiao didn’t do any of the above. Instead, he let his jealousy take control of him and threatened his coworker.

Yep, what a low blow.

The Backstory

Shi was a foreman at the company and worked with his victim, a 52-year-old worksite manager.

Sometime in November 2014, Shi borrowed and used the victim’s storage device after the latter left it in the office. The victim had given full trust to Shi, but when he stumbled upon intimate photos and videos of the victim and his wife, he decided to breach that trust by making copies of those intimate content.

This was, of course, done in secrecy and without the knowledge of the victim.

Fast forward to five years later, on 2 July 2019, the victim received an envelope with an anonymous letter, a CD-ROM, and a mini SD-card.

The anonymous letter told him to check his mailbox and simply said, “Mr XXX; presenting a wonderful little movie for you. He will be playing the player on the internet in the near future. Please cheer together. If you choose to quit or resign, you will not be distributed. Looking forward to your actions.”

There was also a Chinese translation of the above letter. And when the victim checked the CD, all he saw was a video of his wife performing oral sex on him. The worst part was that his wife’s face and her chest can be clearly seen in the video.

After seeing this, he didn’t even check the contents of the mini SD-card. Checking his email inbox revealed at least five other emails threatening to release his sex tapes if he didn’t quit his job from an unknown address. He proceeded to report this incident to the police for fear of his and his wife’s reputations being tarnished.

Well, other than being wary of your colleagues, I guess another lesson to learn is to never put your sex tapes in a storage device and leave it in the office.

Or, well, you can just avoid filming your intimate activities so that no one has any dirt on you.

Court Hearing

After some police investigation, it was found that Shi was the one who threatened the victim and was later brought to court where he pleaded guilty.

He claimed that he was jealous of the victim being promoted, so he decided to threaten him with his sex tapes. He was also annoyed with the way the victim behaved at work.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Zhi Hao asked for at least six months’ jail, considering the fact that he had malicious intent from the moment he saved copies of the victim’s sex tapes five years ago in November 2014.

Furthermore, Shi sent out at least five anonymous threats to the victim.

Shi later pleaded the judge for leniency and claimed that he knew he was wrong and that he shouldn’t have done anything like that to his coworker.

He also shared that he knelt down in front of the victim to beg for forgiveness and for a chance for him to start over. He wanted to return back to China so that he can be reunited with his family and continue working there.

In the end, he was sentenced to six months’ jail on Monday, 16 December, for one count of criminal intimidation by anonymous communication.

For criminal intimidation, he could have been jailed up to two years and fined. Having done so anonymously, he could have gotten an additional two years of jail.
