Imagine this: every day, at around 4am to 5am, you’d hear noises from the upper floors in your HDB block.
What would you do?
For this woman who lives in Blk 79A at Toa Payoh Central, she has a novel solution: put a mannequin head outside her HDB flat, just above the air-conditioning compressor, so that the neighbour would be quiet.
How the logic works, I’m not sure, too.
Noisy Neighbour Doing Weird Things During the Early Mornings
56-year-old Liu Xiulan (transliterated) lives on the third floor of Blk 79A.
She told Shin Min Daily News that practically every day between four and five in the morning, noises from the upper floors have woken her up.
She said that in addition to the annoyances in the early morning, she would frequently hear someone moving chairs around and doing laundry in the middle of the night. Things became worse three to four weeks ago.
There would also be moments when it sounds like someone is taking a shower, flushing the toilet, or doing some washing. She would also occasionally hear someone cutting chillies.
Also, it could worse during the weekends.
Liu theorised that the noise comes from a fourth-floor unit because she has previously looked outside after being woken up by it.
At that moment, no other fourth-floor units had any lights on except that unit.
A lack of restful sleep, according to Liu, has made her more prone to anger and annoyance than usual.
She revealed that she had yelled at her neighbour to be quiet since she was tired of being awoken so frequently.
The lights in the unit were out for a short period, but they quickly resumed their task.
And so, Liu came out with a solution no one would’ve thought of.
Put Mannequin Head Outside HDB Flat to Scare Neighbour
Liu put a mannequin head and a mirror on the air conditioning compressor outside her unit to try to scare them.
It’s nice to know that a mannequin is following COVID-19 rules, but what’s the logic in scaring them?
“I was hoping that when they saw the mannequin head, they would be scared and stop making noise. But it didn’t work,” she said.
This isn’t the first time Liu has problems while living in the flat. Someone on a higher floor once threw trash down and broke her AC compressor.
Back then, the situation was resolved by the town council.
It turns out that the town council is involved in this new situation too…but this time around, they can’t resolve it.
Fourth-Floor Neighbour: It’s Not Us
Shin Min Daily News met with a resident of the aforementioned fourth-floor unit, who only identified herself by her surname Zhang.
The 35-year-old also stated that she began hearing someone dragging chairs and chopping chilli “a few months ago.”
Zhang stated, “Our downstairs neighbours believe the noise is caused by us, and someone from the town council has also visited us to inquire about it. We’ve made it clear to them that it wasn’t us.”
She further stated that Liu also occasionally visits her unit to shout at them. A family member installed a closed-circuit television (CCTV) at their front door after Liu began doing so.
While the mannequin head outside Liu’s unit has frightened Zhang, she has opted to ignore it.
Shin Min Daily News then spoke with residents on the fifth to seventh floors of the HDB flat, but they all denied being the source of the noise. A seventh-floor neighbour remarked that he had never heard such noises before.
You can watch this video to know more about how those “weird” HDB sounds came about (although the part about cutting chilli is…new):
