The many functions of TikTok are truly astounding. Apart from helping to spread awareness of social causes, publicise hidden gems of locations and stores throughout the country, it’s also a makeshift Tinder for some Singaporean teens attempting to get in touch with their eye candy that they caught a glimpse of during their bus ride.
But let’s focus on that second function for now—indeed, TikTok has been great at helping certain underrated hangout spots gain attention, and has enabled many to rediscover Singapore.
One such location is the Pulau Ujong breakwater near Marina Barrage.

Unfortunately, the area has now been cordoned off by authorities for the purpose of crowd control, as it’s quickly becoming a popular hangout spot amid the pandemic.

Authorities Cordon Off Parts of Marina East Breakwater After It Went Viral on TikTok
Breakwater @ Marina East, or Pulau Ujong, went viral on the social media platform due to the picturesque view it affords of the sea and cityscape, as well as breathtaking sunset views.
It’s no surprise that many people flocked to the area for picnics and hangouts, especially during Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) which prohibited dining in and allowed gatherings of up to two individuals. Indeed, it seemed like the perfect hangout spot for couples.
As a result of its popularity fuelled by TikTok, the place became a little too crowded for the likes of a highly infectious virus.
A Facebook post on 7 June stated that a large section of the breakwater has now been cordoned off with tape.
However, there were some people who argued that it was not an effective barrier to deal with crowds as the tape was apparently broken a mere few days later.
In addition, there were still some individuals spotted loitering around in the area.

Though it’s great that many are discovering this otherwise relatively unknown gem in Singapore, crowds are a concern in the midst of the pandemic that we’re still fighting against.
What’s more, some have also raised the issue of litter and trash being left lying around, likely due to the newfound popularity of the place.
According to a man who posted a video on TikTok, he said that he visited the area during low tide and was met with rubbish being strewn all over the place.
He encouraged members of the public to take responsibility for their own trash in respect for the environment.
