Even if you don’t watch Taiwanese shows, the name NONO’s probably familiar to anyone who’s been keeping up with the news.
The Taiwanese host, whose real name is Chen Hsuan-yu, came under fire after former model Amber Chang exposed him for sexual harassment.
After Chang made her experience public, almost 20 other women came forth with claims that NONO had sexually harassed them too.
Two even accused him of sexual assault.
After the accusations went around the internet, NONO suddenly announced last Wednesday (21 June) that he would be quitting showbiz and would be taking time to reflect on his actions.
But it seems like NONO isn’t the only one who has come under fire recently.
Singapore’s very own Mark Lee has as well, but not for the same reason as NONO.
Rather, he was recently slammed by Singaporeans for his opinions regarding the NONO saga.
Mark Lee Said Society Should Forgive Him if NONO’s Wife Can
Lee was speaking about the NONO saga while on his radio talk show on LOVE 97.2FM, Yu Jian Cai Huang Chong.
The talk show, previously known as The Breakfast Quartet, involved Lee sharing how he felt that NONO’s wife could be his biggest source of strength during this period of time.
He even said that “women’s issues should be settled by women”.
Lee then raised an example of how Hong Kong celebrity Sammy Cheng forgave her husband, Andy Hui, after he cheated on her in 2019.
After that, Lee continued by saying, “If even his wife can forgive him, why can’t this society forgive him?”
Ah, yes, so if I steal an entire jewellery shop’s worth of jewels in the future, as long as my spouse forgives me, the whole world should too.
Netizens and Audience Members Slammed Lee for His Statements
After listening to Lee’s opinions on the radio, several listeners took to Lianhe Zaobao‘s online entertainment news column to call Lee out.
Some questioned if Lee meant NONO should be free to do whatever he wants if his wife forgives him.
Others added that his wife was not a victim and hence would not be able to understand the victims’ trauma and suffering.
Netizens also asked if Lee would still say the same thing if one of his loved ones was a victim of such a case.
In general, many slammed Lee for his lack of empathy towards the victims and how he did not hold NONO accountable for his actions.
Lee only said that NONO “should face his mistakes if he is in the wrong”.
For the unaware, thus far, NONO has yet to issue any apologies to his victims.
Apart from that, some pointed out that Lee’s comparison of the NONO case to Sammi Cheng and Andy Hui’s case was inappropriate.
This was because even though Hui cheated on Cheng, he technically did not commit a crime.
On the other hand, if the allegations are true, NONO committed crimes and should be punished by the law.
Lee Still Declined to Comment
When Zaobao contacted Lee’s manager last Friday (23 June), his manager said that Lee declined to comment.
His manager added that no matter what Lee says now, the audience would still feel that he is in the wrong.
Prior to this, Lee attended an interview by Zaobao on 22 June after his radio talk show ended.
During that interview, he said NONO should face the issue properly and not let his family and victims down.
