Everyone’s familiar with incidences of road rage, where a simple honk to warn a fellow road user can sometimes quickly result in having your car windscreen smashed in or worst, having yourself beaten or killed.
Maybe you’ve even been a victim of road rage yourself.
However, in this case, this true story happened in an HDB in Marsiling and it involved two elderly folks who were neighbours – a wheelchair-bound 64-year-old man and a 67-year-old man with some serious anger management and mental issues.
67YO Uncle Visits with a Wooden Stick
In the early morning of that fateful day, the 67-year-old man, who was later identified by the police as Shen Wenfu (transliteration), went over to his handicapped neighbour’s house to ask to see his roommate.
The neighbour told him that his roommate wasn’t around and that he had no idea where the roommate went.
For some reason, this angers Mr Shen so much that he picked up a wooden stick and hit the wheelchair-bound man on the right arm.
The victim’s survival instincts kicked in and he quickly shut the door.
He also reported the incident to the police… as you should.
67YO Uncle Visits Again
Two hours later, the same irascible uncle knocked on the door of his handicapped neighbour again.
However, this time around, the 64-year-old is a little wiser and refused to open the door.
Instead, he immediately called the cops.
Of course, this again angers Mr Shen and he called his neighbour “agua” (“阿瓜”) which is a derogatory term for “gay” at the victim and left.
And you’d think that’s the end of the story… ohhh nos! It’s just the middle.
Because unbeknownst to the poor handicapped 64-year-old, Mr Shen is plotting his revenge.
At around noon that same day, the wheelchair-bound man decided to leave his house.
According to an interview that was conducted by LianHe Wanbao (联合晚报), he was going to the supermarket and wanted to ask another neighbour if he wanted some coffee.
He definitely didn’t expect the stuff that happened next.
67YO Uncle brought a 30cm-long Knife this time
Apparently, Mr Shen has a bone to pick with his neighbour and has been lying in wait for an opportunity to confront him.
He got his chance.
Wielding a 30cm-long knife, Mr Shen stopped his neighbour from leaving, saying that he wasn’t happy that the neighbour kept calling the cops on him.
Seriously though, what did he expect his neighbour to do when his first instinct when reacting to news he didn’t like is to hit someone?
Anyway, the two quarrelled, and in his fit of rage, Mr Shen stabbed the handicapped man in the left cheek and also in his right chest.
With herculean effort to save his own life, the wheelchair-bound 64-year-old managed to knock the knife off his attacker’s hands, preventing Mr Shen from causing even more damage.
Another neighbour who heard the victim’s cries for help called the police.
Help is here
When the medical staff arrived, the victim was paralyzed in his electric wheelchair, covered in blood, but is still conscious.
He was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
According to the medical report, the victim has a fractured left face bone and required an operation on his right chest to stop the bleeding.
He will need to be hospitalized for 7 days.
During the interview, the victim complained that his face keeps feeling numb and that both of his knees are also painful.
It seems like this will be a long and arduous recovery for the poor uncle.
There’s no escaping the long arms of the law
After attacking his neighbour, Mr Shen subsequently locked himself in his house and refused to open the door even when the police eventually came knocking. The police had to break down his door to get to him.
He was still wielding the knife that did the deed.
During his arrest, the 67-year-old complained of fever and chest tightness so the police brought him to the hospital for examination.
While at the hospital, the uncle suddenly went mad, kept swinging his feet and spat at a policewoman’s forehead.
Despite repeated warnings not to do it again, he spat at the policewoman a few more times… for good measure, I guess.
Mr Shen was eventually brought to court to face his crimes.
He was charged with aggravated assault, and assault with a deadly weapon. He pled guilty to both charges.
The court noted that the defendant has been in and out of prison since the age of 24 and that he has not committed a crime – or at least a crime that had caught the attention of the police anyway – since Oct 2015, more than 4 years since his last release.
The mental state of the defendant isn’t the greatest either. He suffers from delirium and lacks social care.
Due to this, the judge sentenced him to 6 years of reformative imprisonment.
