I’m pretty sure everyone in Singapore has tried all the fries in McDonald’s, KFC and Long John Silver’s. While it is merely a side dish, the fries could potentially make or break a meal—so, without reading further, which fast-food chain do you think have the best fries?
Okay, “best” is very subjective, so let’s dive into the different aspect of the fries: the nutrition, the taste and eventually, the variety.
Nutrition
Presuming that calories are “bad” and proteins are “good”, let’s look at the calories and proteins of the fries.
McDonald’s: 283 kcal & 4 g protein (source)
KFC: 242 kcal & 4 g protein (source)
LJS: 350 kcal & 4g protein (source: do note that this isn’t from the Singapore website)
With that, KFC is a clear winner with protein ratio of 1.653%, McDonald’s at a close second at 1.413 %, while Long John Silver’s is at a distant 1.143%.
Winner: KFC
Taste
This is even more subjective, but here’s my take: McDonald’s fries taste exactly just like the fries you can find practically everywhere. People often say that we shouldn’t reinvent the wheel, but KFC’s new fries, rolled out since somewhere last year, is thicker and crispier with a tingle of sweetness, very much unlike the salty fries we’re accustomed to.
However, KFC fries are indeed better due to its focus on the crispiness and sweetness. Long John Silver’s fries have always been crispy and sweet, so comparing these two isn’t an easy task. I would still prefer Long John Silver’s, as theirs are much crispier (and maybe more sinful, but who cares?)
Winner: Long John Silver’s
Varieties
What kind of fries do Long John Silver’s have? For all I remember, it’s the SAME one. It’s definitely not even in the competition.
KFC does not have new fries regularly, but it does have a permanent fans’ favourite: the ultimate cheese fries. However…that’s about it.
McDonald’s has so many varieties, I can’t even name all the ones that came this year, except for the latest one. While they all come and go, that’s the whole idea of variety, right: having different types every now and then? Despite its truffle-flavoured fries not meeting my expectations, the sheer number of new fries rolled out every now and then makes it a clear winner.
Winner: McDonald’s
So, the verdict? Each fast-food giant has one win. In other words, stop comparing and just start eating.
