A Mother’s Day Facebook post by a Melaka teacher has gone viral following her murder by her 17-year-old son. Vernita Boon Chiew Yen, 51, shared the message before her son killed her and his elder brother at their family home on 12 Jun 2025.

The Chinese primary school teacher posted a video slideshow of family photos created by her eldest son, 21-year-old Jarek Lim Boon Kai.
“Although I couldn’t celebrate Mother’s Day this year, I am still happy to receive my first family video that my son created for me,” Vernita wrote in the post.

Mother’s Day Message Goes Viral After Family Tragedy
Vernita’s Facebook post contained a message addressed to her three sons. She wrote, “Mummy just wants all of you to be obedient, grow up happily and healthily, and be wise. Mummy loves you all!”
The video slideshow was created by Jarek for Mother’s Day. Vernita expressed her gratitude and joy upon receiving the compilation.
In an earlier Facebook post from January 2025, Vernita had announced the death of her husband.
SJKC Malim described Vernita as a loving, respected, and dedicated teacher. Staff members said Jarek was well-behaved and friendly to everyone at school.
The Facebook post has been widely shared since news of the murders emerged.
17-Year-Old Confesses to Double Murder Over Exam Pressure
The 17-year-old suspect confessed to police that he had been dissatisfied with his mother for a long time. He said he grew resentful due to frequent scolding about his upcoming SPM examinations.
Investigators found that the teenager had planned to kill his mother while she was asleep in the early hours of 12 June. He had hidden a 20-centimetre folding knife in his school bag.
Jarek tried to stop his brother during the attack. The teenager fatally stabbed both victims in the family’s living room.

Police found stab wounds on the victims’ necks, waists, and backs.
The 13-year-old youngest son was stabbed when he refused to leave the house. He remains in intensive care at Melaka General Hospital with severe injuries.
The teenager reportedly tried to destroy evidence after the murders. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Police arrested him on 12 June.
Neighbours said all three boys were usually very polite. They described the tragedy as unexpected.

Police initially suspected the deaths were the result of a robbery gone wrong.
The funeral service for Vernita and Jarek will be held on 15 Jun at 12pm.
