Video Reportedly Show How Migrant Workers Rushed Out from Gates to Supermarket

The Covid-19 outbreak in Singapore has disproportionately affected migrant workers.

Cramped living conditions and communal bathroom facilities, among other things, have facilitated transmission of the coronavirus in worker dormitories.

Some of them were even locked in their dorms because of fears they would spread the virus.

It’s not controversial to say that we don’t treat our migrant workers as well as we should.

So, when a video showing migrant workers supposedly rushing out of their dorms to supermarkets, we automatically assume the worst.

Video Reportedly Show How Migrant Workers Rushed Out from Gates to Supermarket

A video reportedly showing Kranji Dormitory workers rushing out in crowds to a supermarket has made the rounds on social media.

The video was uploaded to the Facebook page Singapore Eye.

The video shows a large group of workers crowding around a closed gate, while staff members try to control them.

According to Singapore Eye, workers from a dormitory in Kranji were eager to visit the dormitory supermarket, which had been closed for a month and just reopened.

Goody Feed cannot confirm if this is true.

The dormitory staff members can be heard shouting at the workers to form a line, as they try to keep the gate closed.

Once it was opened, however, the workers poured out in crowds, rushing to the supermarket.

Singapore Eye’s post ends with a reminder to the workers:

“Be sure to practise safe distancing. Singapore’s recovery depends on you.”

Netizens’ Reaction

While many condemned the group for not practising safe distancing and even resorted to racism, some netizens surprisingly defended them, pointing out that Singaporeans often react the same way.

We Shouldn’t Jump to Conclusions

After watching a video like that, it’s only natural to want to criticise those workers.

But we only have the word of a Facebook page to go by and a video without any context.

Even if it were true that these workers were rushing out to visit a newly-opened supermarket, why can’t we denounce their actions without disparaging them, their race, or their “culture”?

These workers were clearly wrong to flout the safe distancing rules in place, but our treatment of them sometimes is equally abhorrent.

As MS News reported, many of these workers were not allowed to leave their dormitories as part of precautionary measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, and being segregated from the community can take a toll on anyone.

These workers, just like many Singaporeans, couldn’t wait to leave their homes after the circuit breaker.

CB Has Ended, But Social Distancing Still Necessary

You may be unaware of this, or maybe you’re in denial, but residents are still not allowed to leave their homes for non-essential trips during Phase 1 of the safe reopening.

Despite this, hordes of Singaporeans were seen taking public transport after the circuit breaker ended.

Are we really so much better than those workers in the video as some netizens would have you believe?

We can’t wait for things to return to normal, and understandably so, but rushing our response to the Covid-19 outbreak will just lead to another spike in infections.

Which will then force us to endure another circuit breaker.

Reader: Oh god no… anything but that.

Well, if we don’t want that to happen, we should continue to stay at home as much as possible.

Plus, the authorities said that Phase 1 might end before the end of June, so we might not have to wait too long.

Unless there’s a Phase 1B, of course.
