In the past few months, local news media has been covering on Singaporeans’ sugar intake.
Even brands like Pokka, F&N foods, and Coca-Cola have pledged to reduce the sugar in their drinks to no more than 12% by 2020.
I would say all these were propelled forward after the National Day Rally 2017 where our PM mentioned about the rising risk of diabetes in Singaporeans (3 out of 10 Singaporeans have diabetes over the age of 60).
Heck, even during our lunch breaks, we would talk about sugar levels in our drinks though I only consume Coke Zero.
For those who are planning to reduce their sugar intake, especially coke addicts, it will be easier now as Coca-Cola just launched their mini coke.
The “little brother” comes in 150ml, with only 63kcal whereas the classic coke has 134kcal.
The classic coke contains 35g of sugar (7 tablespoons), almost the daily limit of added sugar which is around 40 to 55g (10% of your caloric intake).
So if you’re consuming more than two cans, you have exceeded your sugar intake and you’re probably on the road to “Diabetes Land”.
The mini coke might have lesser sugar but if you consume two cans of it, then you’re back to square one.
Their mini coke comes in fridge packs (8 x 150ml) and is available at all FairPrice outlets at $7.
For those superfans, you can check out their Mini Kiosks that will be visiting selected FairPrice outlets over the next few weekends.
So, if Coca-Cola can come up with ways to reduce our sugar intake, I am sure we can be more responsible for our own health.
Because in Singapore, you rather be dead than be ill.
But then again, let’s face it: we Singaporeans are going to get the mini Coke because it’s just to Instagram-worthy, don’t you think so?
