In 2019, if you cough in public, no one would bat an eye.

In 2020, if you cough in public, the FBI might just stop a black van beside you, grab you in and keep you isolated for ten years.

And if you cough during a press conference to talk about COVID-19, even if it’s just because someone’s perfume is way too strong, you become a meme.

But what if you went to a press conference with a dry throat?

This is Education Ministry Ong Ye Kung, aka the coolest minister in the world after his interview with Mothership.sg:

He’s so cool, the US even cloned him and starred him in popular dramas like LOST and Hawaii Five-0.

But unlike his clone who has been infected with COVID-19, our Education Minister has been healthy throughout.

Except on the day when everyone was crying after PM Lee announced the Circuit Breaker.

Because everyone was crying, no one noticed that his voice sounded…different. It was almost like he hadn’t drunk any water for years.

And bet you didn’t realise that he cleared his throat as well.

Well, he admitted in an Instagram post later that the reason for his raspy voice was due to a curry puff.

In the interview, he said that the image with the most Likes in his Instagram is the image mentioned above.

He then provided more context about how it all came about, and he turned into Mothership-mode again.

On the darkest day of our lives, it turned out that he was waiting to enter the room when he saw some curry puffs that look “homemade”. The minister had one, and his throat turned dry and raspy immediately.

I bet my boss’ car that Lawrence Wong didn’t have any of the curry puffs. That guy’s voice is always so smooth, he can be an ambassador for Fisherman’s Friend.

Mr Ong then admitted that even with his raspy voice, he couldn’t afford to cough during the press conference, if not people would get worried.

So he tried not to cough but his voice…erm, had been curry-puff-ed.

He then said that Instagram is a good platform for him to allow people to know more about him, and of course the platform has helped him in this manner.
