Monkey Attacked Elderly in Bukit Panjang & Left a Bloody Mess

The long-tailed macaque, a species of wild monkey found mainly in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, are usually not anywhere near housing estates and are generally fearful of humans.

However, two of these monkeys have wandered away from their natural habitat, and entered the housing estates near Segar Road in Bukit Panjang, leaving a trail of destruction and bloodshed.

By which I mean, the monkeys were generally a nuisance, entering flats through windows, stealing food, and messing up the house.

Now, if you’ve seen these monkeys in places like the MacRitchie Reservoir Park, you’ll know that they just like stray cats; they won’t move close to people unless you give them food (which is a no-no, because they’ll become aggressive immediately)

Unfortunately, as the monkeys warmed up to the presence of humans, due to their extended squatting in the Bukit Panjang housing estates, they’ve started to lose their fear of humans and began to show aggression.

People started to get bitten and scratched, when refusing to give the monkeys food.

Fortunately, one of the monkeys were caught late last year. But the other, smaller one remains at large.

In fact, just two days ago, an elderly resident was attacked by possibly the remaining monkey at BLK 472, Segar Road. He was attacked in the morning, and immediately sent to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital afterwards.

Remember I said bloodshed? Yeah, there was a large pool of blood left behind after the attack.

As reports of attacks pop up more frequently, the town council has stepped up surveillance in response. Mr Liang Eng Hwa, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC MP has also asked the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority to take stronger measures to capture the remaining monkey.

Advice to all of you who stay nearby: do not feed or provoke the monkey if you see it. That’s not going to end well for you.

In our office, one of my colleagues has seen first-hand on how aggressive they get once food is thrown to them, and here’s what he said to me: “The monkeys go apeshit and everyone runs.”

So, now you know.
