Monks Allegedly Got into Physical Conflict With Tissue Sellers Outside Waterloo Street Temple During CNY

One might think that religious sites in Singapore would be peaceful and civilised–there won’t be any vulgarities shouted, no physical altercations, and definitely no threats of body discharge being splashed at others.

After all, who wants to sin right in front of the higher entities and risk their wrath, right?

Wrong.

Here’s What Happened

During the Lunar New Year period, many monks from Sri Krishna Mandir temple, in addition to the usual tissue sellers, were seen along Waterloo Street, outside the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, hoping to receive donations from the public.

According to Shin Min Daily News, many tissue sellers were unhappy with the fund-raising monks, as they felt that the monks were invading their turf and poaching their customers.

There were several instances where the tissue sellers would spew a stream of vulgarities at the monks, particularly, whenever a member of the public donated to the monk.

In particular, one auntie repeatedly told the monks, “Stealing from us, you will not have a good death.”

A witness of the incident revealed that these conflicts started on the first day of Chinese New Year, and escalated as the days passed.

Beyond the verbal arguments, the tissue sellers and monks would have physical tussles as well.

The witness shared with Shin Min that one of the tissue sellers had used a stick to hit the monk.

In light of these conflicts, the witnessed observed police officers patrolling the area more frequently, in the mornings and afternoons.

When interviewed by Shin Min, a tissue seller lamented that the monks ended up fundraising in the area for many more days than what they were informed of.

She claimed that the monks would be at Waterloo Street early in the morning at 5am, to “reserve” spaces, competing for business with them.

She even added that she had tried kicking the monks to shoo them away but to no avail. She shared her plans of bringing flour to throw at the monks, in an effort to drive them away.

Another uncle selling tissue there also accused the monks of shifting his chair away, so as to stand at a more optimal location and raise more funds. Allegedly, the public would thus donate to the monks instead of buying from the tissue seller.

This tissue seller told Shin Min that in previous years, he could earn $300 to $400 per day during the Lunar New Year period, but because of this, his earnings have dropped to roughly $200 every day.

A representative of the Sri Krishna Mandir Temple said that they were a legal institution and had fundraising activities year round, all over the island. They simply wanted to raise funds and give back to society, only to be attacked by the tissue sellers.

He alleged that a particular auntie selling tissues there would point a pair of scissors at the monks. She even threatened to splash urine at them.

I guess that would be a good way to mark one’s territory. Except, no customer will dare to enter this territory as well.

According to MustShare News, the auntie has denied these accusations.
