The past few days, I’ve always come home feeling confused.
The skies were grey, the rain was pouring and I had an umbrella. That typically means the temperature has dropped and it’s time to snuggle under blankets.
Now, I find myself drenched in sweat, leading me to wonder if I got wet from the rain, or from sweating so much walking home.

Apparently, this is set to continue.
Expect Thundery Showers
According to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), we can expect “moderate to heavy thundery showers” over many areas across our islands in the first two weeks of May.
They added that we can expect the rain to come in the late morning and afternoon on most of the days.
Apparently, the total amount of rainfall we will experience in the first half of May is above average.
High Temperatures Inescapable
While that sounds like a good time to stay in and watch Netflix, MSS said that the daily maximum temperatures are most likely to remain high, much like what happened in April.
It will range between 33°C and 34°C on most days.
On some days (one or two) when there is less cloud cover, the temperature can hit as high as 35°C.
Monsoon and Sumatra Squall
MSS says that Singapore is still experiencing the conditions of the inter-monsoon. The inter-monsoon refers to being in between monsoon seasons, and this brings about light winds that go in various directions.

The heavy rain is most likely due to the convergence in winds.
The heavy rain is also largely due to something called the Sumatra Squalls.
The Sumatra Squalls are an “organised line of thunderstorms that typically develop over Sumatra island or the Straits of Malacca”.
This results in rains that are more intense but short-lived.
