While many of us happily spent the recent Chinese New Year break munching on CNY goodies and visiting our relatives all over Singapore, 2 Members of Parliament (MPs) did the exact opposite.

2 MPs Tested Positive for COVID-19

Over the holiday, 2 MPs announced that they had tested positive for COVID-19.

The 2 MPs were Minister of State for National Development and Communications and Information and East Coast GRC MP Tan Kiat How as well as Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development and Culture, Community and Youth and Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Eric Chua.

On yesterday (3 February), Tan took to Facebook to share that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

He also explained how he and his wife’s most important priority was to make sure that their son Issac, who is only 18 months old, was kept safe.

After quickly gathering Issac’s belongings and whisking him off to his grandparents’ house, Tan isolated himself in the study.

“I didn’t step out of the study except to use the bathroom and to collect my meals, which were left on the floor outside the study,” he recalled.

On the other hand, his wife had the “unenviable” task of disinfecting and cleaning up the house again to ensure hygiene and took daily ART tests as well as a precaution as she was considered a close contact.

Though she initially tested negative, she tested positive a few days afterwards, which means the couple will have to wait a while longer before Issac can return to stay with them.

Additionally, MP Tan also mentioned that was asymptomatic other than feeling slightly tired, and he “wouldn’t have known if [he] hadn’t been doing almost daily ART” tests, highlighting the importance of frequent testing when it comes to COVID-19, especially the more contagious Omicron variant.

Similarly, on the same day, MP Eric Chua also announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Unlike Tan, he experienced some mild symptoms such as body aches and a low-grade fever. He then decided to take an ART test as a precaution.

“After seeing the faint line under the letter “T”, I freshened up, double masked myself up and proceeded to the nearest GP via pte transport (I drove) to get myself assessed,” he recalled.

Chua then revealed that he was placed under Protocol 2 by the doctor, which will require him to self-isolate before taking another ART test in 72 hours after being diagnosed. If the ART test is negative, he will be free to proceed with his daily activities.
