With the easing of restrictions in many countries, Malaysia seems to be following suit.
Malaysia will be lifting certain COVID-19 restrictions from 1 May 2022. Here are the details.
No More VDS, Tests for Travellers
Malaysian health minister Khairy Jamaluddin said on 27 April that Malaysia will be lifting more restrictions starting from May 2022.
People will be able to enter public areas regardless of their vaccination status, except those who are COVID-19 positive or if you’re an unvaccinated traveller undergoing quarantine.
Yep, this means that even the unvaccinated will be able to enter shopping malls freely.
Malaysia is also removing pre-flight and on-arrival testing requirements for fully-vaccinated travellers. Those who had just recovered from COVID-19 will also be exempt from testing requirements.
But if you’re thinking of throwing your masks away, here’s some bad news: masks will remain compulsory indoors, and on public transport.
However, you won’t need to wear masks outdoors, which is similar to what Singapore is doing right now. You can watch this video for more information:

Daily Infections Lower Than Before, Majority Are Vaccinated
This further lifting of restrictions comes after the reopening of land borders between Singapore and Malaysia early this month.
Both Malaysians and Singaporeans clearly made good use of the reopening, with over 436,800 travellers crossing the borders over the Good Friday weekend.
Malaysia saw one of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in Southeast Asia, but the number of infections has subsided.
The country had a record of over 30,000 cases last month, at the height of the Omicron wave. However, daily infections have since slowed to about 3,300 on 27 April.
Additionally, about 82% of Malaysia’s population are fully vaccinated, with around 50% being boosted.
