Ahh, the woes of first dates.

Remember that guy who interacts with his phone more than he does with you, and the other one who stood you up last minute just because he “forgot to tell you he couldn’t make it”?

How about that girl who demands to be picked up exactly at 6pm downstairs but only gets ready at 7pm?

We all have our fair share of it. I’m not going to lie, dating is tough.

In addition, everyone has different expectations and standards for first dates. Some of us are okay with our first date showing up late. Others might not be.

Most of us are okay with hawker centres, but not for this influencer. She would probably rather be single for life than to go for another first date at a hawker centre.

Influencer Gives Up After Many First Dates At Hawker Centres

Sara Anna is a Malaysian Instagram influencer that had pledged to not date Malaysian men anymore after too many disappointing first dates at hawker centres.

To deal with her disappointment, Sara took it to Instagram story and filmed herself saying her “pledge”, which eventually caused a ruckus online. A repost of her Instagram story video was uploaded onto Twitter on 17 November, and it went viral instantly.

The video has currently garnered over 900,000 views.

“I Don’t Work Hard Just To Sit And Chill At Hawker Stalls”

In the video, Sara said that most of the Malaysian men she has dated on the first date would bring her to a hawker stall. She doesn’t like it, and went on to assert that “Sorry, I’m not being choosy, but I don’t work hard just to sit and chill at hawker stalls.”

She continued adding that she prefers to go to a fine dining restaurant instead of a hawker stall.

“Maybe after we’ve been a couple for awhile, it would make sense to bring me to a hawker stall. But for the first 10 dates, I want fine dining.”

Coupled with her fine dining expectations, she prefers a man who always compliments her and gives her flowers and gifts as well. She also admitted that she is very clingy, so if you fit the bill (pun not intended), feel free to hit her up.

However, these expectations don’t come without a reason. In an interview with mStar, she explained that the Malay men she dated had taken advantage of her status as an influencer.

For example, on one of her dates with a Malay man at a hawker stall, he acted clueless when it was time to pay the bill. Sara had to pay for it in the end.

To sum it up, she had too many bad first date experiences with Malay men and hawker centres.

Netizens’ Reactions

Who could blame her, really? At the age of 25, she already has her own clothing lines called Goldsky by Sara Anna and Posh by Sara Anna.

Not to mention, she is the founder of the Sara Anna Beauty Parlour. With over 260,000 followers on Instagram, her success meant that she kinda has the right to be picky. Kinda.

Some netizens agree with this stand, as they stated that there is nothing wrong with expressing one’s own personal preferences.

One netizen said that “She works hard to get loads of money, it’s her choice to prefer what kind of men. It’s up to her what she likes and what she doesn’t. Most of you are just sour grapes.”

Another one agreed and chimed in that she deserves to be treated the way she wants to be treated.

However, not everyone felt the same way. Some thought her standards were way too high and unreasonable. Netizens commented on how high maintenance she was such that no one would want her. Harsh.

It ultimately boils down to personal lifestyle and choices. At the end of the day, only you know what makes you happy.
