How Much Water Should You Really Drink a Day? Is it Really 8 Glasses?

Alright folks, Iโ€™m fairly certain that at some point in our lives someone must have told us to drink 8 glasses of water a day.

Why? Because water is the source of life! You can go 3 weeks without food but not 3 days without water! We need to drink more water to prevent constipation! We need to drink water so we donโ€™t shrivel up like a mummy!

Heckโ€”more than half of your body is water!

8 glasses a day doesnโ€™t sound like a whole lot now, huh?

Now, before you start chugging water by the pail, hear me out. (Seriously, man. Put down that jerrycan)

You do not have to drink 8 glasses of water a day.

8 Glasses a day?

The thing is, we are still unable to confirm where this โ€œruleโ€ originated.

However, one commonly accepted saying is that you have to drink 1ml of water for every 1 calorie of food you consume. In other words, if I were to consume 2500 calories a day, Iโ€™ll have to drinkโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ approximately 11 glasses of water?!

However, fret not, as we have to take the water we get from our food into consideration as well.

I mean, Iโ€™m pretty sure someone whoโ€™s had a salad and two apples for lunch is way more hydrated than someone who just had a plate of cookies.

Scientific evidence?

Nada, zilch, nothing.

Thereโ€™s actually no scientific evidence behind forcing people to drink 8 glasses of water a day.

According to Aaron E. Carroll, professor of paediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine in the United States, your body will actually remind you to drink water long before dehydration occurs.

On top of that, thereโ€™s also no scientific proof that drinking extra water has any health benefits. Just so you know, there is also no evidence that drinking more water makes your skin more beautiful and hydrated. In other words, drinking more water might not be a healthy thing.

FYI: Research has shown that coffee doesnโ€™t actually dehydrate youโ€”time to go crazy with all the Mocha and Latte!

Conclusion:

In conclusion, just drink whatever amount your body feels is right for you. You donโ€™t have to force yourself to drink an entire glass of water when all you really need is a sip or two.

While drinking more water might not give you smoother and softer skin, Iโ€™m fairly certain it still helps with weight loss. I mean, your stomach wouldnโ€™t have space for an extra slice of pizza after drinking one more glass of water, right?
