6-Month-Old Boy Died in Nanny’s House in Sengkang Due to Cardiorespiratory Failure

On 28 December 2021, a six-month-old boy was found unmoving whilst under the care of his nanny in her Sengkang flat.

Shin Min Daily News reported that his cause of death was cardiorespiratory failure, and allegedly, the baby boy had stopped breathing before he received aid at Sengkang General Hospital.

A moment of silence for the little boy who passed away too young, and too soon.

Arrangements Before the Tragedy

According to the boy’s father and mother, Mr Yong Zhen Cheng and Ms Du Jing Lei, both 30 in age, they asserted that their child had always been healthy and met the necessary developmental milestones.

The mother also said that there had been no issues with her child’s appetite the night before, and her baby was still very happy when he was being brought to the nanny’s residence.

Since the couple were both Malaysians, sending their child to a childcare centre would have cost them $2,000 every month, a hefty sum that would have been burdensome since their household monthly income as accountants was only around $4,000.

Hence, they had chosen to put their child under the care of the nanny, Madam Liu, for $900 per month for her services, trusting that she had more than 10 years of experience in early childhood education, as she had listed on the online website.

Investigations into the Tragedy

According to The Straits Times, the police had been alerted to the boy’s unnatural death at 6:25pm on 28 Dec.

Prior to the police call, Madam Liu stated that the six-month-old boy had fallen asleep in his playpen near the living room at around 3pm. There were no blankets or pillows in the playpen.

Besides the six-month-old boy, Madam Liu also had a one-year-old and nine-month-old under her charge.

At 6:15pm, Madam Liu realised that half of the baby boy’s face had turned purple just as she was going to bathe him. She attempted to wake the boy but to no avail.

She proceeded to call the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for help, and followed the paramedics’ instructions, pressing his chest and gently massaging his back until professional assistance could arrive.

Sadly, the baby was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to the hospital.

Madam Liu had called the couple to apologise for her negligence on Monday night (3 Jan), but she only reached Mr Yong’s sister as the grieving couple were collecting their child’s ashes that morning.

Police state that the investigations are still ongoing.

Likewise, Mr Yong genuinely wants to know what had transpired which led to the loss of their beloved and adorable child.
