If you’ve been living under a rock lately, you probably have Netflix down there with you. If that’s the case, you’ve almost definitely watched the highly-praised Netflix original series, Stranger Things.
If you haven’t, not an issue at all. Just go and watch it. It’s so good!
Anyway, NetflixSG has recently released an ad for Stranger Things featuring something (or actually, somewhere) very close to home. Somewhere that keeps appearing in the news lately for being super weird and creepy. Somewhere that feels too much like the Upside Down in the show.
Take a look here. It’s so scarier, it can’t even be embedded (no lah, actually they turn off the embedding function).
You might wonder what’s the similarity between the Upside Down and Yishun. Well, the Upside Down is a dark and shadowy place in the show, full of creepy stuff, and accessible only through an otherworldly portal. Yishun, on the other hand, is accessible by MRT.
The resemblance did not escape fans of the show, as the short clip quickly reached 180k views and 2k shares in the 2 days since it was first uploaded.
Ever since the multitude of odd crimes and incidents began to be reported, Yishun had been the centre of Singaporean’s overactive imaginations. Jokes, satirical websites and articles popped up everywhere poking fun at the supposed “hive of scum and villainy” that was Yishun.
Understandably, many found it funny and many others did not.
This clip, though, was generally positively received, as many commenters added to the joke on the Facebook post itself. NetflixSG has actually replied to a few, with Stranger Things Season 1 gifs, to great comedic effect.
I know that isn’t exactly breaking the fourth wall, but hey: it really does look like the characters talking to us. Agar agar lah.
Stranger Things Season 2 should be releasing this year, on 31 October 2017, also known as Halloween. Meanwhile, go catch up with Season 1 if you have yet to do so. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
And by the way, unlike normal TV drama, you get to view all the episodes when it’s released. Anyone taking leave on 31 October as well?
