In a world where creative marriage proposals have become a trend, gone are the days when guys had to brainstorm unique ways to pop the question to their beloved girlfriends.
From scenic picnic proposals at Marina Barrage to flash mob engagements and even the memorable drone light proposal that raised the bar high, Singaporean men are becoming more innovative in their ideas regarding marriage proposals.
Like, proposing when you’re getting your “chocolate bar”, too.
2 Newly Commissioned SAF Officers Proposed to Their Girlfriend During Their Commissioning Parade
On 9 September, during a commissioning parade, two newly commissioned SAF officers decided to make this occasion even more special by proposing to their girlfriends in front of their fellow graduates.
Reader: What is a Commissioning Parade?
For those unfamiliar with a Commissioning Parade, it signifies the end of an Officer Cadet’s rigorous training and the commencement of their journey as fully-fledged officers in the Singapore Armed Forces.
This day was a significant milestone in their military careers and personal lives when these two officers chose this remarkably important day to ask for their girlfriends’ hands in marriage.
Marriage Proposal Gone Right, Girlfriends Said Yes
The heartwarming video of these proposals was shared on TikTok by user @mrhendran on 10 September and quickly went viral across various social media platforms, amassing over 240,000 views on TikTok alone.

In the video, the two officers stand amidst a crowd, kneeling on one knee before their girlfriends.
The moment was picture-perfect as it was accompanied by a stunning sunset backdrop, which added a touch of romance to the scene. Photographers quickly rushed to capture the precious moment.
Fortunately, both girlfriends joyfully accepted the proposals, with one couple celebrating with a tight hug while another woman had the ring placed on her finger by her fiancé.
Their fellow officers cheered enthusiastically, not only for the newly engaged couples but also for their achievements on that special day.
Criticism from Netizens
However, as with any viral content, not everyone had purely positive reactions.
While neither couple has announced when they will tie the knot, some netizens have expressed their thoughts on the couples’ young age to get married, as most newly commissioned officers are relatively young (think: NS age).
A Reddit thread has emerged following the viral video, in which a user commented on the matter.
Meanwhile, negative comments can be seen on TikTok, where netizens felt the same.
Well, Singaporeans will always be Singaporeans. We even have a Facebook group called ‘COMPLAINT SINGAPORE’ that illustrates how much Singaporeans complain about everything.
Nonetheless, it’s essential to remember that everyone’s journey and choices are unique, and rather than criticise, we should respect their happiness. The least we could do is not leave a hate comment on a stranger’s proposal video.
The commissioning parade at the SAFTI Military Institute marks the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School.
According to a press release by MINDEF, 216 cadets, comprising 173 from the Singapore Army and 43 from the Republic of Singapore Air Force, were commissioned as Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officers on 9 September.
