On Monday (7 Dec), the police in Newcastle, England were called in for assistance at a luxury apartment.

When they arrived they found a 51-year-old woman who was not breathing. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was later identified as Madam Pek Ying Ling, a Singaporean who had taken a trip to the UK recently with her husband.

What shocked everyone, of course, was that her husband, Fong Soong Hert, was the one charged with murdering her.

Now, it turns out that the couple was supposed to meet up with their sons there for a family vacation.

Pek’s three sons said they have been left “truly devastated” by the death of their mother.

According to Northumbria Police, they are being supported by specially-trained family liaison officers as they attempt to come to terms with their loss.

“The whole situation is a huge shock to us,” they said in a joint family statement.

“We were supposed to meet up for a family holiday, we are truly devastated. This is an incredibly difficult time for us so we ask that our privacy is respected while we grieve.”

The police expressed their condolences to Pek’s loved ones, and made a request to the public to avoid any speculation about the case.

The 50-year-old has been remanded in custody since his arrest on Monday, and appeared in court yesterday via video link.
