A News Channel Wrongly Used an Image of K-pop Group BTS To Report on Jonghyun’s Demise

Lest you’re unaware, K-Pop idol Kim Jong Hyun recently committed suicide, a news that shook idols and fans alike and threw shade onto an already tainted industry.

With it being widely-publicised news, many media outlets naturally picked up on it, with some churning out multiple articles on the topic (*cough* not us *cough*)

In fact, it got a point where even Chicago’s TV station NBC Chicago decided to feature the popular singer’s death.

But there was just one tiny hiccup:

NBC Chicago featured a different K-Pop idol in place of the actual Kim Jong Hyun.

What happened?

In the recent broadcast of NBC Chicago’s ‘5 AM Morning News’, K-Pop star Kim Jonghyun’s death was covered. However, in place of the singer’s actual group Shinee, footage of ‘BTS on The Ellen Show’ was played instead.

Subsequently, the leader of BTS, Rap Monster, was shown to be “dead”.

The anchor reported Jonghyun’s death and even stated, “That man recently appeared on ‘The Ellen Show’ and the ‘American Music Awards‘.”

Just saying, but I would’ve thought it normal for an Internationally known TV station to at least conduct some research beforehand, seeing how many of us are doing research 24/7… for research purposes.

Outrage

Following NBC Chicago’s mistake, Netizens have taken to the web to air their frustrations.

“This is disgusting. Someone’s life was lost and this news station didn’t even properly research. This is awful”

“This is disrespectful to so many”

“This is just upsetting… They didn’t even bother to do the research.”

One was so affected that he/she confessed that she was “ashamed to be American right now”.

They have since apologised

NBC Chicago has since apologised for its mistake, with a sincere Twitter post on the matter.

“Yesterday, while reporting on the death of Kim Jong-hyun, a member of the popular South Korean boy band SHINee, NBC 5 mistakenly aired video of the band BTS during our morning newscast. We sincerely apologize for this error.”

Well, at least they apologised.

Although I can’t help but wonder how it’s possible for such an obvious slip-up to go through.

It’s not like NBC Chicago is being run by Steve Harvey either…
