Always wondered how it’s like to be in the shoes of a local politician?

Well, wonder no more.

On 4 Jul, Singaporean politician and Workers’ Party East candidate Nicole Seah granted a little ‘glimpse’ into her daily life, with a 4:17 video clip on social media site Facebook.

And let’s just say that despite her golden girl image…

She lives life more or less like the rest of us.

According to the video (which was posted on her official Facebook page), Nicole Seah is way more than a popular Singaporean politician;

She is also an avid singer, self-reflective individual and a huge fan of freshly-brewed Teh C Kosong.

In the 4:17 clip, the former National Solidarity Party (NSP) candidate revealed how she has progressed as a political candidate and an individual and detailed her discoveries while doing house visits throughout the years.

One finding, for instance, is that Singaporeans tend to feel like “second class citizens”.

“We do encounter people who have genuine concerns that they are looking to raise,” she said.

“And there’s this term that keeps getting thrown around, a lot of them feel like second-class citizens,” she said. “To the extent that they don’t feel safe; they don’t feel secure in their own jobs, even if they were to try very hard, even if they were to work very hard and contribute to the company.”

She then projected one of the Worker Party’s aims, which is to offer a Redundancy Insurance that will make Singaporeans feel more valued.

But the video, contrary to what one might have initially expected, is not all about politics and self-discovery. It also featured the politician’s daily routines, one of which involves Teh C Kosong.

Daily doses of Teh C Kosong.

“I have my own tea dust and I make my own teh c kosong every day.

“My family says that if I don’t have teh c kosong, I get a bit cranky. So then I will fill up to slightly over one cup? So I will just like tarik twice…”

At this point, she showed off some deft coffee-making skills that would have made a coffee shop stall assistant proud.

She also poked fun at both the interviewer and herself, asking why everyone seemed scared of her teh c kosong and questioning why she has such a hobby when everyone else has an interesting one.

She then jokingly portrayed a children’s table as her work table, where she does her work and operate Zoom calls.

“At a children’s table?” the interviewer asked, evidently mystified.

“Dude, I’m kidding,” she replied, before bursting into infectious chuckles.

In the final segment of the video, the Singaporean politician recognised how youths have become steadily more thoughtful and acknowledged how the politicians will really have to strive for votes this time around.

She also pointed out that the Worker’s Party has fielded candidates from different races, age groups and backgrounds in this year’s election, a fact that might make youths feel “a lot more represented”.

“And I truly believe that, you know, the Worker’s Party is a sensible and reasonable opposition, and they will have the same considerations,” she said.

Political candidates have their own niches and daily routines, just like everyone else. And honestly speaking…

This makes them seem so much more human, rather than the mere formal personas they present in front of live audiences.

And with that said, I wish all the political candidates luck in this year’s election process

And hope that no matter what happens, Singapore will continue moving forward. As it should be.

Lest you’ve forgotten, polling day will be on this Friday (10 July). So what happens if you didn’t vote? Would you be jailed? Would you be barred from buying bubble tea for the next five years? Watch this video and you’ll know the consequences:
