By now, I’m sure most of us would have at least heard of alopecia, especially after the infamous slapping incident involving Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars this year.
And if you’re not aware yet, alopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss in sufferers. Even though it is not life-threatening, there is no doubt that it still takes a toll on individuals’ mental health and self-esteem due to how it alters one’s appearance.
Even though this condition may seem foreign to some of us, a quick look around might make us realise that it’s a lot closer to home than it may seem.
For one, influencer Nina Tan, who used to be from the local YouTube channel Night Owl Cinematics, recently took to Instagram to document her struggle with the condition.
Just two days ago (23 April), Tan posted a series of photos and videos on Instagram to reveal her diagnosis, and typed a candid caption that discussed her feelings regarding this issue as well.

In her first time publicly addressing her diagnosis on social media, she mentioned that she first got her diagnosis around two months ago.
“It has been 2 months since I found out that I had alopecia and it has been quite disheartening. I have been getting different [doctors’ advice] and receiving treatments. Yes, there are results but it’s still at a spreading stage. Having to go through the constant hairloss, swelling, throbbing headache and medications plus dealing with life is just…. I know it’s just hair…. But this entire period is just frustrating,” she wrote.
Her post has since garnered over 160 comments, with many local influencers such as Xiaxue offering her warm words of support.
Previously on 9 March, Tan also addressed her struggles with hair loss in an Instagram post.

In her caption, she acknowledged that “everyone [has] their own stresses and it’s no big deal”. However, it became an issue for her soon.
“My hair was breaking up with me and I had to seek medical help,” she explained, and mentioned how she was undergoing treatment for her hair loss.
Prior to her post, Tan has actually also been posting updates regarding her hair loss on her Instagram Stories since late February this year.
She even said in one of her stories that she was trying her best to stay positive about the situation, but was still sad about the situation that she was faced with.
Thanked Those Around Her for Their Support
In her post, she also expressed her gratitude to her close circle of friends, saying that they were “nothing but supportive” throughout the process, especially when she was feeling down.
She also thanked those who have been supporting her, saying, “I wanna thank the hundreds of you who dropped me a DM to encourage me.”
Apart from that, she also extended her appreciation to those who shared their own stories regarding hair loss and alopecia with her, and emphasised how grateful she was even though she has yet to reply to a lot of their messages.
“Some of you even shared your experiences and pictures which in a way brings me comfort. A lot of you asked for my progression thus far. I admit that I don’t really reply to DMs mainly because [I’m] not good with words for now,” she recounted.
Tan also wrote about her ongoing struggle with the condition, and the impact that it has had on her mental health.
“Some days [I’m] okay, some days [I’m] not and I don’t wanna pretend to be all good. I loved my long ass hair and I even thought about shaving my whole head,” she wrote.
Currently Undergoing Treatment in Hopes of Recovery
She also talked about her recovery process in her post, and stated that she is currently going through treatment for her alopecia at Clifford Aesthetics.
Tan spoke positively of the establishment and its services, and even said that her doctor has been the “most kind and gentle” with her issues.
“I [remember] him telling me to ‘focus on recovery’ and making monthly check-ins with me. He lightens up this whole nightmare for me. [It] has been two months now and the results surpass whatever I have read online. Baby steps baby hair ftw (for the win)!” she wrote in a hopeful tone.
She also assured her followers that she would “continue to update [her followers] on the progression”.

According to UpToDate, around 2% of people around the world are diagnosed with alopecia.
Although it is most commonly seen on the scalp, it can also cause hair loss in other areas of one’s body such as the eyebrows, eyelashes and other regions.
However, even though the autoimmune condition currently has no cure, it is still possible for sufferers to undergo treatment like Tan to regrow their hair.
