You must be wondering, why is there a Whatsapp logo in your Facebook app?

Or maybe, if you’re like me, you would NOT have noticed the WhatsApp logo in your Facebook App.

No, I’m not such a Facebook fanatic that I camp there for each and every update on the App Store. My boss was the one who enlightened me on this.

But when I went back to my own phone to catch a glimpse of this mysterious sight, I couldn’t find anything.

Hmm. Puzzling, isn’t it?

It turns out to be that this WhatsApp icon is only available on Android.

In the above screenshot, you would have noticed the WhatsApp logo appearing as an option in the Android app’s main menu.

My Apple friends, you’re not losing out, not to worry.

Because… do you know what happens when you click on the option?

NOTHING.

Friends, it’s not a joke. Tapping it simply launches WhatsApp from Facebook.

So I guess the only benefit from this is that you don’t have to leave Facebook to access WhatsApp from your phone’s home screen.

Calm down, I know how you feel because I’m scorching through the internet to find something worthy to write about this abnormal phenomenon but… I can’t find leh.

Why would Facebook, a social media giant, ask its engineers to code this only to have it serve such a small purpose?

But I’m pretty sure there’s going to be an awesome function for the WhatsApp logo on FB. Maybe.

But here’s something even more important about WhatsApp and FB you got to know.

They’ve recently become BFF and WhatsApp might be selling you out.

Stop WhatsApp from sharing your data with Facebook

Everyone knows that WhatsApp has been acquired by Facebook.

But what you probably don’t know is that the phone number you used to sign up for WhatsApp, as well as the last time you used the service, is shared with Facebook according to the updated WhatsApp FAQ page.

According to WhatsApp, they are sharing information with Facebook for these reasons:

  • To more accurately count unique users.
  • Better fight spam and abuse.
  • If you are a Facebook user, you might see better friend suggestions and more relevant ads on Facebook.

Well, if you don’t buy their explanations (like me) and don’t want to sync the two apps, then here are the steps to counter this.

  • Launch WhatsApp on your phone.
  • On Android / iOS, go to Settings.
  • Select Account.
  • Tap the checkmark to the right of Share my account info.
  • To disable the feature, tap Don’t Share.

You will probably get a pop-up that reads, “If you tap ‘Don’t Share’, you won’t be able to change this in the future.”

So if you’ve made the decision, go ahead and tap ‘Don’t Share’.

I’m telling you because they mean business. After you follow through with this action, there is no turning back.

Irreversible process ah, mind you.

I guess Facebook is still exploring other options so maybe they are in stage 1 of introducing the WhatsApp logo on its app. Give them some time.

Meanwhile, we shall be patiently camping beside our phones for the next update. #JustSaying #Don’tThinkIWillDoIt
