Are you from NTU?
Recognize this guy?
Yes, some of you may know him as Associate Professor Wang Jianliang who teaches Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
Today, you will know him as Wang the Hulk (my boss came up with that name). We all know that a long day in school can leave us feeling tired, restless and sometimes grumpy.
All you want to do is to get home speedily so that you can have a nice shower and relax. However, Wang the Hulk took this to the next level.
The deed
Wang, 57, was driving somewhere along Pioneer Road North. And like many others, he was glad to have finally left Pulau-NTU.
However, he was now thrust into the evening peak hour. As he entered the merging lane of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), Mr Lim, another driver refused to give way to Wang.
This ticked something inside of Wang and ‘greatly annoyed him’.
And that was when Wang the Hulk appeared.
Wang displayed his car’s fantastic speeding skills by speeding up on the road shoulder and took over Mr Lim’s car. Which, by the way, is an offence: you shouldn’t be on the road shoulder unless you’re driving an ambulance.
Wang was about to give Mr Lim a lesson on not giving way (ha! see what I did there).
When in front of Mr Lim’s car, he jam braked to show his displeasure not once, but three times. For the first two times, Mr Lim’s driving instructor would have been proud to see him pass his reaction response test.
Sadly, on the third time, Mr Lim’s car kissed the backside of Wang the Hulk’s car.
They then followed the usual accident procedure: both men got out of the car to take photos and exchange details for their insurance.
Mr Lim defies the Hulk
In an act of defiance, Mr Lim refused to give Wang the Hulk his driving license. Uh oh, big mistake.
Wang the Hulk evolved into his full form.
Wang the Hulk showed his true might. He yelled at Mr Lim. When Mr Lim tried to escape the situation and go back to his car, Wang the Hulk yanked his car door open and grabbed his arm.
Wang the Hulk proceeded to hit Mr Lim’s car window and bonnet. From all this, he racked up more than $4,000 in damages.
Having released all his anger and frustration, a bout of sanity returned and Wang offered to pay for the damages.
Sadly, it was too late to apologise (eh, eh, eh, eh).
Suspended from NTU
For this, Wang has been suspended from NTU, pending the outcome of the university’s disciplinary proceedings.
They added, “NTU expects all members of its community to represent the highest ethical standards and to comply with the law at all times.”
Redemption
I certainly hope that Wang’s one week stint in jail, the $2,000 fine that has been slapped on him and the six months ban from driving will grant him the time he needs to find himself again.
Just as The Hulk (the real one) had such an amazing character arc, I believe that Wang can redeem himself.
While he acted belligerently this time, next time, he can be benevolent.
We all have that monster within us who is ready to come out when wronged.
However, road rage is never the way to go. We put the lives of others and ourselves in danger. No matter how much control you have over your car, you can never predict what is going to happen.
Disclaimer: This article is not to shame Wang but to share how trivial things can push our wrong buttons. It is not about what happened to us, it is about how to react.
