The Covid-19 pandemic has made Singaporeans’ lives infinitely worse.

No more meeting with your entire secondary school class, no more hipster dancing at nightclubs with the strobe lights, and even if you want to go to the beach, where it’s nice and sunny (scientists say Covid-19 hates that environment), you’ve got to book yourself a slot.

But here’s one other thing that’s been made apparent during this period.

Some people just can’t have nice things.

NTU Reportedly Suspending All Sports Training After People Broke COVID-19 Rules Repeatedly

Previously, the authorities have promised that if people were to continue illegally gathering at basketball courts, they will be closed (and some in Yishun and Tampines were really shut down).

Now, a prestigious university in Singapore has followed through on that promise.

On 20 Oct 2020, it was reported that Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has suspended sports teams within the university.

The reason?

Many students were found breaking Covid-19 rules.

Breaking Rules In Broad Daylight

The basketball courts within the campus were spotted packed with people, according to TNP, and photos and videos of sports teams and clubs breaking the rules found their way to NTU Student Sports.

NTU Student Sports, which oversees 45 different sports clubs and teams, called for a time-out.

This includes the NTU basketball team, which came in at third place (male) and first (female) in the National Youth Sports Institute 2019 League.

Suspension Of Student Sports Activities

What made this move particularly harsh isn’t the fact that there’ll be no sports activities held on campus.

It’s a suspension of all activities, meaning the clubs and teams are not supposed to hold training off-campus as well.

NTU Student Sports hopes that the clubs and teams would use this chance to reflect on their own behaviour, as well as review their training processes and plans.

“It is important that we conduct ourselves at all times in a responsible manner for the safety and well-being of the NTU community.”

It was added that if there is any more breaching of Covid-19 Safety Management Measures (SMM), more consequences will come their way.

“Not Fair”

Of course, not all students are happy with the verdict.

Some found it unfair, especially when “a majority” has adhered to the measures.

A student who was interviewed said that facilities were booked and measures were kept.

It’s the “fields” and “courts” which are the problems, given that there’s no control on accessibility there.

Now, if you’re not part of any sports club and wants to continue using the facilities, don’t worry because according to NTU Student Sports, general students are not affected by this time-out.

So you can continue to book and use the place.

But if you’re caught breaking Covid-19 SMM? Chances are, that privilege might just be taken away soon.
